Despite unrealized losses exceeding $8 billion on its Ethereum holdings, BitMine Immersion Technologies continues aggressive accumulation under Chairman Tom Lee
The company recently added over 111,000 ETH and now controls nearly 4.5% of the total supply, setting sights on an ambitious 5% target in 2026 while executives secure substantial compensation packages.
BitMine Immersion Technologies has emerged as one of the most aggressive corporate buyers of Ethereum. By mid-May 2026, the company reported holdings of 5.39 million ETH, valued at approximately $11.5 billion. This positions BitMine with control over roughly 4.47% of Ethereum's circulating supply.
The latest weekly addition of 111,942 ETH came as prices pulled back below $2,200, which Chairman Tom Lee described as an attractive entry point. The company has maintained its strategy despite significant paper losses on earlier purchases.
According to regulatory filings, BitMine acquired its earlier ETH positions at an average cost basis around $3,795 per token. By late February 2026, with 4.47 million ETH on the books purchased for $16.97 billion, the fair market value stood at just $8.79 billion. This created an unrealized loss of $8.18 billion.
Even as losses mounted, the company continued buying. By May 17, holdings had grown by 18% to over 5.27 million ETH. BitMine has repeatedly stated its goal of reaching 5% of total Ethereum supply, referring to the target as the "alchemy of 5%." Tom Lee has expressed confidence that this milestone will be achieved sometime in 2026.
The company has staked 4.71 million ETH, representing over $10.1 billion in staked assets. Officials project this could generate around $276 million in annual staking rewards at current yields through its MAVAN Made in America Validator Network.
While the company's balance sheet has taken a severe hit, key executives have secured significant financial benefits. Before major losses accumulated, BitMine issued warrants and compensation packages tied to its shift toward an Ethereum treasury strategy in 2025.
Lee-affiliated advisory arrangements and related stock offerings resulted in warrants valued at nearly $349 million expensed immediately. Placement agents received additional warrants worth over $134 million. Tom Lee's own compensation package, approved in early 2026, could reach $95 million in cash over five years, plus millions in restricted stock units and performance-based awards.
Funding these ETH purchases has required substantial shareholder dilution. Through at-the-market offerings, the company raised billions while issuing hundreds of millions of new shares. Stock has declined sharply, losing over 30% year-to-date and 88% from its 52-week high.
Despite the drawdown, Tom Lee remains strongly bullish on Ethereum. He points to two major trends: growing Wall Street interest in tokenization and increasing demand for neutral public blockchains from artificial intelligence systems.
The company highlighted recent comments from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who noted that nearly 90% of his net worth remains in ETH. Buterin also discussed the Ethereum Foundation's shift toward a more focused, long-term role.
BitMine officials argue that these developments support continued accumulation during price weakness.
BitMine's approach represents a high-stakes corporate treasury strategy centered almost entirely on Ethereum. While the company emphasizes long-term potential, current market conditions have tested this conviction. ETH has fallen more than 42% from the company's average acquisition price.
Analysts and market observers have drawn comparisons to past crypto corporate failures, noting that BitMine's paper losses now surpass certain historical benchmarks in the industry. The company acknowledges risks related to leverage, volatility, and potential further equity drawdowns in its filings.
Nevertheless, leadership continues to frame the accumulation as a strategic bet on Ethereum's fundamental role in future financial and technological infrastructure.
