Global payments firm backs 36-hour XRPL developer event set for October, with tracks on protocol upgrades, autonomous AI agents and on-chain credit infrastructure ahead of Ripple’s Swell conference
Mastercard has signed on as a sponsor of the upcoming XRP Ledger Hackathon, a 36-hour developer competition organized by XRPL Commons in New York. The event is scheduled for October 24–25, 2026, immediately before Ripple’s annual Swell conference, and will bring together blockchain builders, investors, institutions and financial industry participants.
The sponsorship places one of the world’s largest payment networks inside a gathering centered on practical applications for the XRP Ledger. Participants will work across four defined tracks that address core protocol development, artificial intelligence-driven finance, lending systems and open-ended experimentation.
Protocol Innovation challenges developers to advance the XRP Ledger’s foundational technology. Work in this track covers network amendments, client implementations and new developer tools. A Core Dev Bootcamp running October 20–22 will provide participants with hands-on preparation before the main competition begins.
Agentic Finance examines how autonomous AI agents can initiate and complete secure on-chain transactions. As software systems gain the ability to operate independently, machine-to-machine payments and automated settlement are expected to play larger roles in financial workflows.
Lending and Borrowing focuses on the XRP Ledger’s developing credit infrastructure. Projects may build around the proposed XRP Ledger Lending Protocol, the XLS-66 amendment and Single Asset Vaults under XLS-65. These features remain subject to validator voting as the network continues its upgrade process.
The fourth track, titled Why Not, gives teams freedom to pursue ideas that fall outside the other categories. Existing products may also enter by integrating XRP Ledger functionality rather than starting from scratch.
Mastercard’s participation aligns with its broader exploration of blockchain settlement and digital asset infrastructure. In June the company announced plans to support regulated stablecoin settlement, including Ripple USD (RLUSD),across the XRP Ledger and seven additional networks. The program aims to give issuers and acquirers more options for transaction timing, including intraday, weekend and holiday settlement, subject to institutional participation and staged rollout.
Earlier collaboration includes a 2025 initiative with Ripple, WebBank and Gemini to examine RLUSD as a settlement asset for Gemini credit-card transactions on the XRP Ledger. Ripple also joined Mastercard’s CBDC Partner Program in 2023, and both companies took part in a pilot involving Ondo Finance’s tokenized U.S. Treasury fund.
XRPL Commons has noted Mastercard’s prior work on RLUSD settlement pathways involving Gemini. The sponsorship itself confirms event participation; it does not announce a new Mastercard product, live payment integration or commercial deployment on the XRP Ledger.
The hackathon arrives as the XRP Ledger ecosystem continues to expand its capabilities in programmable payments, stablecoins, tokenized assets and decentralized lending. Developers will have a compressed window to turn concepts into working prototypes and present them in a city that serves as a hub for both traditional finance and digital-asset activity.
Successful projects could attract attention from payments-industry participants, including the sponsor. Any further commercial steps involving Mastercard or other institutions would require separate announcements beyond the current sponsorship confirmation.
Registration details, judging criteria and the precise scope of sponsor involvement are expected to be released by XRPL Commons in the coming weeks.
