Version 1.1 of the XRPL AI Starter Kit adds support for Stripe and Tempo’s Machine Payments Protocol, letting autonomous software agents settle digital service costs on the XRP Ledger
Ripple has expanded its tools for developers building autonomous payment systems, releasing version 1.1 of the XRPL AI Starter Kit. The update integrates the Machine Payments Protocol, an open standard co-authored by payments firm Stripe and blockchain project Tempo, along with the Open Wallet Standard. This allows artificial intelligence agents to create wallets, monitor transactions and settle payments for data, computing resources and other online services using XRP or Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin RLUSD.
The software remains in beta. Ripple has not named any commercial users of the new Machine Payments Protocol integration and has disclosed no related payment volumes.
The Machine Payments Protocol works through a straightforward challenge-response process. When an AI agent requests a resource, the service returns a price. The agent authorizes payment, after which the resource is delivered. Settlement on the XRP Ledger occurs in roughly three to five seconds with low, predictable fees.
Version 1.1 supports both one-time charges and ongoing payment sessions. For sessions, an agent can deposit XRP into a payment channel once, authorize cumulative spending as it consumes services, and allow the provider to settle the total in a single on-chain transaction. Individual payments already accommodate issued tokens such as RLUSD. Extending the session feature to stablecoins depends on a proposed ledger upgrade that has not yet activated.
The Open Wallet Standard integration enables software to manage wallets across multiple blockchains through a common interface. Agents can request transactions without direct access to private keys while enforcing limits such as spending caps and approved destinations. The kit is designed to work with AI clients including Anthropic’s Claude and provides tools for wallet creation, real-time processing and documentation access.
Ripple previously added support for the x402 open payment protocol in June. That standard, backed by Stripe, Coinbase and Cloudflare, has processed an estimated 75 million to 120 million machine-to-machine transactions in recent months, with combined value in the tens of millions of dollars. By adding the Machine Payments Protocol now, Ripple backs both frameworks rather than selecting one.
This dual approach gives developers using either standard a path to accept XRP or RLUSD on the XRP Ledger. Projects that began with Stripe and Tempo’s protocol can incorporate the assets without changing their chosen payment framework. Ripple has also joined Mastercard’s Agent Pay for Machines program, a group of more than 30 industry participants developing infrastructure for agentic commerce.
The update positions XRP and RLUSD as settlement options in an emerging category of machine-to-machine payments. AI agents that purchase API access, model inference, cloud computing or data can operate with authorized wallets and execute transactions within parameters set by human operators, reducing the need for manual approval of each small payment.
Payment channels offer a practical mechanism for high-frequency, low-value activity. An agent can fund a channel, stream signed authorizations off-chain while using a service, and settle the aggregate amount later. This reduces on-chain load while preserving finality and low costs on the XRP Ledger.
Tempo, which co-authored the Machine Payments Protocol, launched its mainnet in March 2026 and focuses on payment-specific blockchain infrastructure with backing from Stripe and Paradigm. The integration does not constitute a direct incorporation of XRP into Stripe’s consumer checkout products. Instead, it places XRP Ledger capabilities inside the broader standards ecosystem those companies are advancing for autonomous software agents.
No timeline has been provided for the ledger upgrade required to extend payment sessions to RLUSD. Markets continue to monitor institutional engagement with XRP, including exchange-traded fund activity and related corporate treasury holdings, alongside regulatory developments that could influence broader adoption of digital assets in automated payment systems.
