The $12 trillion asset manager launches Schwab Crypto with competitive 0.75% fees, powered by Paxos, as Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF outflows reach $233 million.
Charles Schwab has begun rolling out direct spot trading of Bitcoin and Ethereum to selected retail clients through its new Schwab Crypto platform. The move marks a significant step for one of Wall Street's largest brokerages into the cryptocurrency market.
Clients with eligible brokerage accounts can now open dedicated Schwab Crypto accounts to buy and sell the two leading digital assets directly alongside their traditional investments. The service uses Schwab Premier Bank as custodian and Paxos for trade execution and sub-custody.
Schwab's 0.75% fee sits between competitors: lower than Fidelity's 1% but higher than E*TRADE's 0.50%. For a $10,000 purchase, clients pay $75 in fees compared to $100 at Fidelity. This pricing strategy targets the massive Schwab customer base of over 39 million active brokerage accounts managing nearly $12 trillion in assets.
The launch arrives as Bitcoin trades near $81,000 and Ethereum around $2,250. Together, the two assets represent the bulk of the cryptocurrency market by capitalization. Schwab has signaled plans to expand its crypto offerings in the coming months.
The timing coincides with notable outflows from spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs. Recent data showed $233 million in combined outflows, with BlackRock and Fidelity products leading the way. Ethereum ETFs experienced proportionally larger redemptions relative to their asset base.
Industry observers question whether some retail money is shifting from ETF products toward direct ownership through familiar brokerage platforms. Schwab's infrastructure could appeal to investors seeking simplicity without managing separate exchange accounts.
For Schwab clients, the primary benefit is reduced friction. Previously, investors needed separate accounts on crypto-native platforms with different logins, funding methods, and tax reporting. Now, Bitcoin and Ethereum can sit in the same interface used for stocks, bonds, and retirement accounts.
This integration lowers barriers for conservative investors who have avoided crypto due to platform unfamiliarity or security concerns. Schwab's established reputation provides comfort that newer or smaller exchanges cannot match.
| Platform | Fee | Custody/Execution |
|---|---|---|
| Charles Schwab | 0.75% | Schwab Premier Bank + Paxos |
| Fidelity | 1.00% | Fidelity Digital Assets |
| E*TRADE | 0.50% | Not specified |
The broader impact could include pressure on other traditional firms like Vanguard that have resisted crypto integration. With multiple major brokerages now offering spot trading, Bitcoin and Ethereum are becoming normalized as portfolio components for everyday investors.
