Zcash developers have agreed on block 3,543,405 as the target for Network Upgrade 7 activation, with the upgrade expected to reduce block intervals from 75 seconds to 25 seconds and implement changes to shielded transactions and transaction fees
Zcash developers finalized the activation height for Network Upgrade 7 at block 3,543,405 through a GitHub proposal by contributor Sean Bowe. The decision followed a ZIP editor meeting and received approvals from developers ValarDragon and str4d. The pull request remains open pending incorporation into the full deployment specification, but the team updated its public dashboard to reflect the planned point.
Block 3,543,405 is anticipated to arrive around November 5, providing the network with a concrete milestone rather than a fixed calendar date. This adjustment follows the successful testnet deployment of NU7 on October 4 at block 4,465,026. The move brings greater certainty to infrastructure providers, exchanges, and wallet operators preparing for the consensus shift.
The activation still requires final integration into node software and compatible full-node releases before the height is reached. Zcash Foundation readiness tracking shows six of twelve required tasks complete, with Zebra node synchronization and mainnet preparations as the primary remaining items.
Under the upgrade, Zcash will reduce its target block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. This change triples the expected frequency of block production while preserving the network’s existing monetary issuance schedule through adjusted per-block rewards. Three consecutive confirmations will therefore take approximately 75 seconds on average, compared with nearly four minutes under the current rules.
Shielded transaction limits within individual pools and across the network are also introduced to manage increased processing demands. Developers tested these adjustments on the testnet, where faster block production has already been evaluated for operational stability.
The upgrade does not create a new transaction format. Version 5 and version 6 transactions remain fully supported, allowing seamless continuation of shielded activity.
NU7 introduces the Network Sustainability Mechanism, which temporarily removes 60 percent of transaction fees collected in each block from circulation. Miners receive the remaining 40 percent, while the withheld portion accumulates in a publicly tracked reserve. Reissuance of these funds is scheduled to begin around February 2031 at mainnet block 8,939,664, helping maintain the existing halving schedule and 21 million ZEC supply cap.
This approach offsets the impact of more frequent blocks without expanding the monetary base beyond current parameters. The mechanism ensures that accumulated fees support future mining rewards rather than immediate new issuance.
| Upgrade Element | Current Status | NU7 Change | Target Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Target block interval | 75 seconds | 25 seconds | November 5 |
| Transaction fees | Distributed directly to miners | 60% removed from circulation into reserve | Reissuance February 2031 |
| Shielded transactions | Version 4 supported | Version 4 disabled | Upon activation |
| Legacy privacy pool | Sprout active | Sprout transactions invalid | Upon activation |
NU7 disables version 4 transactions, which are the only format needed to spend funds from Zcash’s original Sprout shielded pool. Balances remaining in Sprout at the moment of activation will become unspendable under the updated consensus rules. Holders must transfer eligible funds into supported pools before the upgrade to maintain access.
Version 5 and version 6 transactions are unaffected by this restriction. The change closes the legacy privacy system while preserving the privacy features of the active pools. Full-node operators running unsupported software may temporarily follow an incompatible chain, but deployment instructions emphasize updating to compatible versions prior to the activation height.
The agreement on activation height triggered a sharp rally in Zcash (ZEC),with the token rising approximately 12 percent in the 24 hours following the proposal. Trading levels reached around $1,270 to $1,334 depending on the snapshot, reflecting investor interest in the faster confirmations and clearer roadmap.
Year-to-date gains have already exceeded 148 percent for the privacy coin. Infrastructure providers have completed preparatory steps, including Zebra 7.0.0 release candidates and Zakura node updates, while exchanges such as Gemini have migrated supporting systems.
Node operators and indexers are encouraged to verify compatibility with the forthcoming specification and Zebra updates. The November target window gives sufficient time for wallets and exchanges to prepare for the consensus change without immediate disruption.
