CEO Charlie Scharf says the bank is preparing digital payment solutions while joining a 21-institution group targeting a dollar stablecoin in early 2027
Wells Fargo is advancing preparations for potential stablecoin opportunities even as its chief executive questions the strength of demand in the United States. During the bank’s third-quarter earnings call on October 13, 2026, CEO Charlie Scharf outlined ongoing investments in blockchain-based payments and confirmed participation in a multi-bank initiative to issue a U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin.
Wells Fargo is one of 21 leading international financial institutions that announced plans in September to establish a new company in the second half of 2026, subject to closing conditions. The group aims to bring a U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin to market in the first half of 2027.
The proposed token is designed to support wholesale, institutional and retail customers. Primary use cases include cross-border payments and settlement of digital assets. After the initial dollar offering, the consortium intends to expand into additional Group of Seven currencies, with the euro identified as a priority.
Participating institutions include Bank of America, Capital One, Citi, Fidelity Investments, Goldman Sachs, PNC Financial Services, Scotiabank, TD Bank Group, WisdomTree, Banco Santander, BBVA, Commerzbank, Crédit Agricole, Deutsche Bank, Lloyds Banking Group, Coöperatieve Rabobank, UBS, MUFG Bank, Sirius International Holding and Standard Bank. The company name has not yet been disclosed.
The group stated that its stablecoin solution will be structured to comply with the GENIUS Act in the United States and the Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation in Europe where applicable.
Separately from the stablecoin project, Wells Fargo launched tokenized deposits for corporate and commercial clients in September 2026. The service runs on the bank’s proprietary blockchain platform and enables 24-hour transfers. Initial functionality covers selected U.S. dollar-to-British pound transactions, with plans to add more clients, countries and currencies during 2027 based on demand.
Tokenized deposits represent claims on funds held at the bank and remain within its regulated and insured system. Scharf said the platform will help clients move money between accounts and across borders more efficiently as it expands. The bank is also involved in broader industry efforts to connect tokenized deposits across multiple institutions.
Wells Fargo reported net income of $5.95 billion for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, compared with $5.59 billion a year earlier. Revenue rose 2 percent to $21.87 billion. Diluted earnings per share increased to $1.87 from $1.66.
Scharf said the bank is accelerating investment in both traditional and digital payment services for consumers and businesses. Corporate money transfers were cited as an early application for the tokenized deposit platform.
The stablecoin joint venture and the tokenized deposit service form distinct initiatives. One is a multi-bank effort to create a new form of digital money for payments and settlement; the other keeps client funds inside Wells Fargo’s existing banking framework while adding blockchain functionality.
