The AI company has lowered its capital raise and valuation targets following a sharp decline in technology shares and rising competition for investor funds
OpenAI has reduced the size of its planned private funding round and lowered its target valuation in response to a recent selloff in technology stocks. The company is now seeking to raise approximately $20 billion at a valuation of $1.25 trillion, according to reports citing people familiar with the matter.
Previously, OpenAI had aimed to secure $30 billion in new capital based on a $1.4 trillion valuation. The revised figures represent a cut of $10 billion in the fundraising goal and $150 billion in the valuation target.
The decision comes amid a broader retreat in technology shares. The Nasdaq 100 index has fallen roughly 10 percent from its record high reached on October 6, including a 4.5 percent drop on the most recent Friday. Anxiety surrounding the pace and sustainability of the artificial intelligence boom has weighed on investor sentiment across the sector.
OpenAI had set a deadline of October 31 for investors to commit capital. Reports indicate the initial close of the round is now expected to bring in less than $20 billion after some participants scaled back their intended allocations.
Market volatility is not the only factor influencing OpenAI’s approach. The company is also competing for capital with Anthropic, another major artificial intelligence developer. Anthropic is preparing for a public listing planned for November and is reported to be targeting a raise of as much as $100 billion at a valuation of $1.5 trillion.
OpenAI earlier delayed its own initial public offering plans until at least 2027. As a result, the company has concentrated on private market financing in the near term rather than pursuing a public listing.
| Company | Fundraising Target | Valuation Target | Listing Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI | $20 billion | $1.25 trillion | 2027 or later |
| Anthropic | Up to $100 billion | $1.5 trillion | November planned |
Rapid growth expectations over the past two years had driven sharp increases in valuations for artificial intelligence companies. The recent equity market decline has led investors to apply greater scrutiny to pricing in both public and private markets. OpenAI’s revised terms illustrate that large funding rounds remain available, yet conditions have tightened and valuations face closer examination.
Access to significant capital in the artificial intelligence sector continues, but the terms of those deals now appear more closely tied to measured valuation levels than during earlier periods of elevated expectations.
