Intercontinental Exchange will collaborate with tZERO on transfer-agent and settlement systems for its planned NYSE-affiliated platform while investing in the firm and licensing its patents
Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, has entered into agreements with blockchain infrastructure provider tZERO to advance infrastructure for tokenized securities. The collaboration centers on systems that support on-chain settlement for an upcoming NYSE-affiliated market known as the Digital Trading Platform.
Under a memorandum of understanding, tZERO will act as a premier design partner in developing digital transfer agent and broker-dealer infrastructure. The goal is to enable compliant transfers and settlement of tokenized securities transactions. Subject to regulatory, technical and operational requirements, tZERO is expected to become an approved digital transfer agent and participant on the platform. In that role it would maintain ownership records for tokenized shares and ensure transfers meet securities rules.
ICE has agreed to invest in tZERO’s latest financing round. The size of the investment was not disclosed. In connection with the financing, ICE will receive a license to tZERO’s blockchain patent portfolio for use on the Digital Trading Platform and other potential applications.
The portfolio consists of 103 patents across 23 patent families. These cover core elements of the security token lifecycle, including compliance-aware transfer logic, upgradeable smart contract frameworks, scalable handling of corporate actions and broker-dealer-level identity interoperability.
The companies will also examine the potential use of tokenized assets as collateral at ICE clearing houses and other affiliates. Such arrangements could allow tokenized securities to support trades across ICE’s markets.
This agreement builds on ICE’s existing efforts in tokenization. In March, ICE named Securitize as a digital transfer agent eligible to mint blockchain-native securities for corporate and ETF issuers on the planned platform. tZERO is positioned to become a second approved transfer agent, which may help establish common technical standards across providers.
Industry projections indicate substantial growth potential. One estimate from Citi places the tokenized securities market at $5.5 trillion by 2030 as banks, asset managers and market operators move traditional assets onto blockchain systems.
The partnership deepens a prior relationship. ICE made a strategic investment in tZERO in 2022. The latest steps focus on the practical infrastructure required for public tokenized securities markets, including ownership tracking, settlement and potential collateral applications within regulated frameworks.
