Community voices push back on indifference claims as former researcher proposes major structural changes
As Ethereum navigates a period of internal shifts and market challenges, two key discussions have emerged within the community. One addresses perceptions about co-founder Vitalik Buterin's stance on ETH's valuation, while the other calls for a new organization to better align incentives with the network's economic success.
Ryan Berckmans, a longtime Ethereum participant and holder, has directly challenged the idea that Vitalik Buterin and the Ethereum Foundation (EF) do not care about ETH's price. He describes this view as a misconception that misses their broader strategy for the network's enduring success.
According to Berckmans, the Foundation's high confidence in Ethereum's path makes short-term price movements seem insignificant compared to larger goals. These include achieving post-quantum security, positioning Ethereum as the central hub for trillions in assets, and supporting thousands of Layer-2 networks worldwide. He argues these priorities naturally support network growth and strength.
Recent staff changes at the EF are presented not as signs of doubt but as normal adjustments in a dynamic team. Some departures stem from strategic differences, others from shifting priorities, with room being made for new contributors, including younger talent.
Berckmans emphasizes that the Foundation's dedication remains strong, backed by these structural efforts rather than short-term price speculation.
In a separate but related development, Dankrad Feist, a prominent former Ethereum Foundation researcher, proposed creating a new organization to replace or supplement the current EF structure. His suggestion comes amid recent resignations and ongoing debates about leadership direction.
Feist outlined requirements for the new group: at least $1 billion in ETH funding, revenue from staking fees, a board focused on increasing ETH's value, and a competent leader "who wants to fight." This proposal reflects frustrations that the current Foundation prioritizes technical ideals over economic and market considerations.
Ethereum has maintained its position as the second-largest cryptocurrency but has faced price stagnation relative to broader market gains. Recent on-chain data shows increased ETH supply on exchanges and activity among large holders, coinciding with ETH trading around $2,100-$2,135 levels.
The discussions occur against a backdrop of leadership transitions at the EF. Several members have resigned following the release of a new mandate document earlier this year. That document stressed priorities beyond profit or rapid adoption, stating the organization is "NOT a marketing agency" and "NOT opportunists."
Critics argue this approach has contributed to ETH's underperformance compared to expectations. Supporters, like Berckmans, maintain that the focus on foundational strengths will deliver results over the long term.
These elements highlight the tension between Ethereum's technical ambitions and the community's desire for stronger economic alignment and price performance.
The contrasting perspectives underscore ongoing debates within the Ethereum ecosystem. On one side, there is confidence in a deliberate, technically focused strategy that prioritizes decentralization and long-term viability. On the other, calls for more direct economic incentives and aggressive leadership aim to address price performance and holder concerns.
Whether through internal adjustments at the Foundation or the creation of new aligned entities, the community's input will likely shape Ethereum's next phase. As the network continues to scale through Layer-2 solutions and attracts institutional interest, balancing technical excellence with economic realities remains central to its success.
Stakeholders across the board agree on Ethereum's potential as a foundational blockchain platform. The challenge lies in executing strategies that satisfy both visionary technical goals and the practical needs of users and investors who measure progress in part through ETH's market value.
