Major U.S. crypto exchange suffers widespread disruption due to Amazon Web Services data center overheating
Coinbase, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, faced a significant service disruption on May 7-8, 2026, triggered by a thermal event at an Amazon Web Services (AWS) data center in Northern Virginia. The outage affected trading, deposits, withdrawals, and mobile app functionality for thousands of users.
Users began reporting issues around 6-8 PM ET on May 7. Problems included inability to place or cancel orders, delayed transfers (especially on Solana and ALEO networks),login difficulties, and degraded performance across web and mobile platforms.
Downdetector recorded a massive spike in reports, with complaints split between trading failures, transfer issues, and app access problems. Coinbase quickly acknowledged the incident on its status page, attributing it to an AWS outage in the US-EAST-1 region, specifically impacting Availability Zone use1-az4.
In response, Coinbase shifted all markets to Cancel Only mode to let users cancel existing orders while preventing new ones. The exchange then moved into auction mode before gradually restoring full trading capabilities. Full recovery took more than seven hours in some cases.
This is not the first time Coinbase has been impacted by AWS infrastructure issues. The incident highlights the crypto industry’s heavy dependence on centralized cloud providers for 24/7 operations. Critics pointed to recent workforce reductions at Coinbase, including a 14% cut as the company shifts toward an “AI-first” operational model.
Despite the disruption, Coinbase repeatedly reassured users that all customer funds remained secure and unaffected on-chain.
| Service | Status During Peak Outage |
|---|---|
| Spot Trading | Cancel Only Mode |
| Transfers / Withdrawals | Delayed / Failed |
| Mobile App | Degraded Performance |
| Customer Funds | Secure |
The outage revives concerns about single points of failure in cryptocurrency infrastructure. As major exchanges scale using cloud services like AWS, events like thermal anomalies or regional failures can create widespread ripple effects. Analysts suggest greater multi-cloud redundancy and on-premise hybrid solutions may become necessary for mission-critical trading platforms.
Coinbase has committed to a full post-mortem once AWS publishes its official report. Users experiencing issues are encouraged to check the official Coinbase status page and contact support.
