A power incident at Google Cloud’s London region interrupted Revolut crypto trading, payments and account access for customers across Europe on October 20
Customers of the digital banking platform Revolut faced widespread service interruptions on Tuesday after a power event at Google Cloud’s London data center region affected core functions including cryptocurrency trading, card payments and transfers.
Google Cloud reported elevated errors and intermittent network failures in its europe-west2 region, which serves much of Europe. The company identified a power event as the trigger. The disruption began around 06:08 UTC and continued for nearly eight hours before mitigation measures took effect. Engineers continued addressing residual network issues after the power problem was resolved.
Revolut’s status pages listed dozens of services as partially unavailable. Affected functions included cryptocurrency trading, stock trading, card payments, bank transfers, ATM withdrawals, account sign-ins, identity verification and customer support chat. In some markets the company recorded more than 30 impacted services.
Users across the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal and other European countries reported difficulty opening the app, viewing balances or completing transactions. Several crypto and stock investors said their portfolio screens appeared blank, preventing them from checking holdings or placing trades. Others encountered error messages when attempting payments at stores or withdrawing cash.
One customer in France noted problems specifically with Revolut’s dedicated cryptocurrency platform. Portuguese users described visible balances that still blocked successful transactions. Reports of failed card payments and inaccessible accounts appeared across multiple countries during the morning hours.
Revolut stated that customer funds and data remained secure throughout the incident. The company linked the problems to the Google Cloud disruption and said its teams began recovery work as soon as the issue was identified.
Google Cloud confirmed the power event had been mitigated while its engineers continued work on elevated error rates and network instability. The company apologized to affected customers and recommended shifting workloads to other available zones or regions where feasible.
By early afternoon UTC the outage window closed. Revolut’s U.S. status page later showed all systems operational after earlier listing 28 services as partially unavailable. Card payments, transfers and ATM withdrawals gradually returned, though some European status pages continued to show residual partial unavailability into the afternoon.
Revolut had expanded its partnership with Google Cloud in September 2025 to support global operations. A person familiar with the situation confirmed the Revolut interruption was connected to the cloud provider’s London-region problems.
Some customers of other U.K. banks, including Lloyds and HSBC, also reported temporary outages on the same morning. No direct causal link between those reports and the Google Cloud power event was established. There was no indication of problems on underlying blockchain networks such as Bitcoin or Ethereum.
The episode left many Revolut users temporarily unable to access funds for everyday purchases or manage investment positions during a period of continuous crypto market activity. Revolut serves more than 80 million personal customers worldwide and offers cross-border payments, foreign-exchange services and cryptocurrency trading alongside traditional banking features.
As of late Tuesday, Revolut reported progressive restoration of services and reiterated that customer money and data had remained protected.
