Cardano has successfully implemented the Van Rossem hard fork, marking the network's first upgrade approved through its onchain governance system and introducing efficiency gains for smart contracts
Cardano has officially activated Protocol Version 11 on its mainnet through the Van Rossem hard fork. This event represents the first time a major network upgrade was approved entirely via onchain voting by Delegated Representatives, stake pool operators, and the Constitutional Committee under the governance framework established in the Conway era.
Intersect, the organization coordinating Cardano's governance processes, confirmed the smooth deployment. The upgrade required at least 85% of active stake pools to run compatible node software, ensuring network stability during the transition. Testing indicated no performance regressions, and security audits validated the new features.
The Protocol Version 11 upgrade focuses on improving the Plutus smart contract platform. Key changes include new features through multiple Cardano Improvement Proposals, reduced execution costs via an updated cost model, and faster processing with new case expressions for Boolean, Integer, and Data types.
Additional updates encompass expanded cryptographic functions such as BLS12-381 support, greater consistency across Plutus versions V1, V2, and V3, and strengthened ledger rules for enhanced security. The transaction format remains unchanged, facilitating seamless integration for existing decentralized applications.
These advancements lay the groundwork for Cardano's upcoming Dijkstra era, which is expected to introduce more advanced capabilities, including the Ouroboros Leios consensus protocol.
Following the activation, ADA experienced modest gains, trading around $0.165 with a slight increase in the 24-hour period. The token formed a golden cross on the hourly chart, where the 50-period moving average crossed above the 200-period moving average, signaling short-term bullish momentum.
However, ADA continues to face resistance near the daily 50-period moving average at approximately $0.168. A sustained break above this level could open the path toward higher targets, while support sits near $0.13. Market observers note the upgrade coincides with these technical developments, though broader price action remains range-bound.
| Technical Indicator | Current Value | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly MA 50/200 | Golden Cross Formed | Bullish Short-Term Signal |
| Daily MA 50 | $0.168 | Key Resistance |
| Daily MA 200 | $0.256 | Potential Upside Target |
The successful implementation underscores Cardano's commitment to community-driven development and positions the network for further evolution in its smart contract ecosystem.
