Abracadabra has raised borrowing rates across its lending markets and paused liquidity incentives after its stablecoin Magic Internet Money (MIM) fell to around $0.50, well below its $1 peg, in response to renewed liquidity pressures
The decentralized finance protocol Abracadabra activated urgent steps following a significant drop in its dollar-pegged stablecoin, MIM. Market data indicated the token traded near $0.50, representing more than a 50% deviation from its intended value. This latest depeg followed an initial decline to around $0.74 in mid-June, a partial recovery to $0.89, and then a sharper fall.
With a circulating supply of approximately $104 million, the price movement created challenges for the protocol's lending ecosystem. MIM is issued through collateralized borrowing positions in structures known as Cauldrons, where users deposit yield-bearing assets to mint the stablecoin.
Abracadabra stated it was "acutely aware" of the situation and moved to reduce outstanding MIM supply. The primary actions include gradually increasing interest rates across all Cauldrons, covering both active and deprecated markets. This adjustment aims to make holding open debt positions more costly, encouraging borrowers to repay loans.
The protocol highlighted that the current market discount creates a "natural incentive" for borrowers. Users can purchase MIM at the reduced price on the open market and use it to repay debt at face value, effectively burning tokens and contracting supply.
In tandem with rate hikes, Abracadabra suspended direct incentives and Curve-related rewards until the peg stabilizes. This represents a shift from supporting liquidity provision to prioritizing debt repayment and supply reduction.
Earlier in June, the protocol had injected $100,000 into a Curve liquidity pool consisting of MIM, USDT, and USDC to address imbalances following withdrawals tied to incentive changes. However, this measure proved insufficient to prevent the deeper depeg.
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Target Peg | $1 |
| Recent Low | Around $0.50 |
| Liquidity Injection | $100,000 to Curve pool (June 15) |
| Circulating Supply | Approx. $104 million |
This episode occurs against a backdrop of challenges for the protocol. Abracadabra previously experienced a security incident resulting in substantial losses, including reports of around $13 million in MIM affected in one case and a separate $1.8 million exploit in 2025. These events have contributed to ongoing scrutiny of its risk management.
Stablecoin stability in DeFi relies on balanced liquidity pools, particularly on platforms like Curve, where thin or imbalanced conditions can amplify price movements. The current measures focus on internal supply dynamics rather than further direct liquidity additions.
The response underscores the vulnerabilities faced by crypto-collateralized stablecoins during periods of market stress and thin liquidity. MIM's performance depends on borrower activity, collateral quality, and the depth of trading venues. The protocol indicated it would provide further updates as plans develop.
