Elon Musk’s platform is in talks to use digital dollars for royalties under its new Original Content Rewards Program, according to people familiar with the matter
Social media platform X is examining the use of stablecoins, among them Circle’s USDC, to compensate influencers and content creators, according to a person familiar with the discussions. The conversations remain ongoing and form part of broader industry interest in digital dollars for payout systems.
X has not issued an official confirmation. Media representatives for the company did not immediately respond to inquiries.
The timing coincides with X’s overhaul of its creator compensation model. The platform is phasing out its long-running Revenue Sharing program, which relied primarily on advertising revenue and view metrics. In its place, X is introducing the Original Content Rewards Program.
The new initiative is designed to reward creators who contribute original ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity and commentary. A person close to the plans said stablecoins are under consideration as a payment method for these royalties, particularly for a global network of users.
Stablecoins, whose combined market capitalization exceeds $300 billion, have become a common tool for blockchain-based payments. They enable faster and lower-cost transfers across borders compared with traditional banking rails, an advantage for platforms serving creators in multiple countries.
Traditional bank transfers can involve delays and higher fees, especially for smaller or more frequent payments outside the United States. Digital dollars pegged to the U.S. currency could simplify distribution without full reliance on local financial systems.
The exploration fits within Elon Musk’s stated aim of developing X into an “everything app” that combines communication, commerce and financial services. The company has advanced X Money as its payments infrastructure, securing U.S. licenses and partnering with Visa on digital wallet capabilities.
Parallel activity already exists elsewhere in Musk’s companies. SpaceX has used USD-pegged stablecoins, and in some cases Dogecoin, to handle certain Starlink customer payments in emerging markets.
In March, X appointed Benji Taylor as head of design. Taylor previously led design work for Coinbase’s Base blockchain network and brings experience in crypto wallets and decentralized finance. His role also connects to xAI and SpaceX.
The person familiar with the talks noted that other social media platforms are similarly testing stablecoins for influencer commissions. Discussions with X continue, yet no details have been released on potential launch timing, operational mechanics or a final choice of stablecoin.
For the moment, the plan remains exploratory and unconfirmed by the company itself.
