World Liberty Financial announces ongoing buybacks for its WLFI governance token, funded partly by USD1 stablecoin reserve fees, following a steep post-election drop and political pressures
World Liberty Financial, the decentralized finance project with close ties to the Trump family, announced on November 6 a formal long-term buyback program for its WLFI governance token. The company plans to fund purchases with an initial allocation that may include fees earned from reserves backing its USD1 stablecoin, along with other ecosystem revenue sources.
The move arrives as WLFI trades near $0.047 after substantial losses. Different reports place the year-to-date decline between more than 60% and roughly 66%, with one measuring a drop of more than 73% from a November 2025 high of about $0.1744. The token also fell around 10% in the immediate aftermath of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, in which Democrats made significant gains.
World Liberty Financial described the program as an ongoing element of its long-term strategy rather than a one-time intervention. The company has not disclosed the size of the initial allocation, a purchase schedule, or any commitment to burn tokens. Only about 32% of WLFI’s 100 billion total supply is currently circulating.
In a further statement, the firm said buybacks are intended to form a continuing part of its approach, with pace and scale guided by ecosystem growth and effects on governance participation. Separately, it noted the aim of encouraging active participation in WLFI governance and consolidating voting power among committed long-term holders.
The company has conducted prior open-market purchases. In April it reported spending $65.6 million on WLFI buybacks over the preceding six months.
Revenue from interest on the Treasury bills and cash that back the USD1 stablecoin forms a potential funding source for the buybacks. USD1’s circulating supply stood at approximately $3.63 billion, down from about $4.43 billion in late September and a peak near $5.39 billion in February. A smaller supply reduces the reserve income available for such programs.
At roughly $0.0476, WLFI carried a market capitalization of about $1.51 billion. Other tokens linked to the Trump family have also faced heavy pressure, with the Official Trump token down roughly 85% over the past year and Melania Meme down around 41% this year.
The Trump family holds an ownership stake of about 38% in the company behind the project.
The announcement follows the midterm elections and comes as Democrats prepare to assume control of key congressional committees. Representative Robert Garcia, expected to chair the House Oversight Committee, has indicated that World Liberty Financial is among the likely early targets of inquiries that could begin as early as February 2027. Senator Elizabeth Warren, anticipated to lead the Senate Banking Committee, has previously criticized Trump-linked crypto activities and raised concerns about potential conflicts involving the firm.
World Liberty Financial is also engaged in a separate legal dispute in which Tron founder Justin Sun is seeking sanctions against the company and its attorneys.
No further operational details on the timing or volume of WLFI purchases have been released. The company has framed the program as a structural measure to support governance participation rather than a short-term price support tool.
