Stablecoin giant funds open-source on-device AI and self-custodial payments infrastructure to reduce cloud dependency and enhance privacy
Tether, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin USDT, has officially launched a comprehensive developer grants program aimed at accelerating the development of local-first artificial intelligence systems and decentralized payments infrastructure.
The initiative, announced today, emphasizes building technologies that operate independently of cloud services and centralized intermediaries, addressing growing concerns around data privacy, latency, and single points of failure in both AI and financial applications.
The grants program features fixed payouts ranging from $1,500 to $4,000 per completed technical milestone, payable in USDT or Bitcoin. Unlike traditional open-ended funding models, rewards are tied directly to specific deliverables, ensuring tangible progress across Tether’s open-source ecosystem.
There is no upper limit on total program expenditures, signaling Tether’s strong commitment to fostering innovation in this space. Developers can apply to active tasks via the dedicated platform.
Complementing the grants program, Tether’s AI Research Group recently unveiled QVAC MedPsy — compact medical language models designed for edge devices. The 1.7B parameter model outperformed Google’s larger MedGemma-4B system by over 11 points on key medical benchmarks, while the 4B version surpassed even bigger 27B models in clinical reasoning tasks.
These models run entirely on smartphones, wearables, and local hospital hardware without internet connectivity, delivering faster responses with significantly fewer tokens. Performance highlights include superior results on HealthBench Hard and various MedQA-style evaluations.

This latest program builds upon Tether’s established track record of supporting decentralized technologies. The company has previously awarded multiple $100,000 grants to the BTCPay Server Foundation, donated $250,000 to OpenSats, and distributed over 500 student education grants through its Plan B partnership with Lugano.
By focusing on local-first principles, Tether aims to create robust, privacy-preserving systems that empower developers and end-users alike, reducing reliance on centralized cloud providers and data-hungry business models.
