The Ethereum layer-2 network will begin decommissioning infrastructure after November 25, leaving any remaining funds at risk of permanent inaccessibility as the project shifts fully to applications on Base
Sophon has established a firm November 25, 2026, deadline for users to remove assets from its blockchain before the planned permanent shutdown of its mainnet on November 30. The project announced the final timetable on October 19, stating that key infrastructure and related websites will start closing after the earlier date. Any balances left on Sophon Chain after the cutoff risk becoming permanently inaccessible.
The notice applies to liquid holdings of SOPH, Ether, USDC and other tokens, as well as unclaimed staking rewards, Guardian rewards and assets still deposited in Sophon Farm. Users are directed to the official claims portal to withdraw liquid balances and claim outstanding rewards, and to the designated farming interface for positions held there. The team advised completing all transfers well before the deadline to avoid congestion or technical issues and stressed exclusive use of official links to avoid phishing sites that often surface around network closures.
The wind-down follows a June decision by Sophon’s developers that the expense of running a dedicated Ethereum layer-2 network no longer justified the benefits. Annual operating costs exceeded $3 million. The project, which launched as a zero-knowledge powered chain aimed at consumer applications in gaming, entertainment and artificial intelligence, will instead concentrate on consumer finance and AI products built on Base, the Coinbase-backed layer-2 network. Revenue generated by those applications is intended to fund purchases and burns of the SOPH token.
Sophon had raised approximately $70 million in total funding, including a $10 million seed round and more than $60 million from a 2024 node sale, along with later support from Binance Labs. Despite that capital, the team concluded a standalone chain was not sustainable. The move parallels a similar decision by Abstract, another consumer-oriented Ethereum layer-2 project, which announced its own closure for mid-December after sustaining substantial losses.
The shutdown of the Sophon mainnet does not automatically eliminate the SOPH token. Several exchanges had already adjusted support earlier in the year. Binance discontinued Sophon mainnet deposits and withdrawals on August 4 and shifted SOPH to the Ethereum ERC-20 standard at a one-to-one ratio, leaving its spot, margin, futures and Earn products unaffected by the network change. Upbit has scheduled the end of SOPH trading for November 16, ahead of the chain’s final closure.
Holders whose balances already reside on the Ethereum network face a different situation from those still holding assets on the retiring Sophon chain. The latter group must complete withdrawals through the designated official channels before November 25. Sending tokens to an exchange deposit address that no longer supports the original network can result in unrecoverable funds. Confirmation of a successful transfer requires verification on the destination chain rather than reliance on an outbound transaction alone.
SOPH’s original functions as a gas and staking asset on its native network are ending. The project’s updated token framework ties future utility to revenue-driven buybacks from consumer applications, including a payments product known as Pyre. No audited revenue projections have been released to quantify that model.
Following the latest announcement, SOPH reached a new all-time low near $0.001623, more than 98 percent below its May 2025 peak above $0.11. The project reiterated that November 25 is the operative date for action, not the final network shutdown five days later. Infrastructure needed for withdrawals may become unavailable once decommissioning begins, even if the chain continues producing blocks for a short additional period.
Users are advised to inventory every type of position—wallet balances, unclaimed rewards and farm deposits—separately, because each may require its own process. Official communications remain the only reliable source of links and instructions. Sophon has not indicated any extension beyond the stated deadline for those who miss the window.
