Latin America's largest digital bank starts U.S. operations via partner bank and introduces multi-currency account using USDC and EURC
Nu, the digital banking company known as Nubank in Latin America, has begun offering financial products in the United States and launched a separate multi-currency account designed for cross-border users. The dual rollout, disclosed on September 10, 2026, marks the firm's first major step beyond its core markets of Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.
U.S. services operate through Lead Bank, an FDIC member, because Nu's own national bank charter remains under conditional approval. Customers can open deposit accounts, obtain debit and credit cards, and send transfers. In parallel, the Nu Global account converts deposits into the dollar-pegged stablecoin USDC or the euro-pegged EURC and supports transfers across more than 35 countries.
The U.S. Nu Account pays a variable 3.50 percent annual percentage yield on available balances, with interest calculated and credited daily. Deposits sit with Lead Bank and receive FDIC insurance subject to standard limits. A limited-edition metal debit card is available at launch with no annual fee.
A Mastercard credit card carries no annual fee and delivers unlimited 1.5 percent cashback. The company plans to raise that rate to 2 percent for customers who meet future conditions. Qualifying account holders who also use the credit card and complete a minimum number of eligible transactions may later earn 4.50 percent APY on savings balances of up to 10,000 dollars. Higher balances continue to earn the standard rate.
Domestic transfers are free. International transfers initially cover Brazil, Mexico and Colombia, with additional destinations expected later. Nu describes the package as designed to become a primary banking relationship for American customers over time.
| Product | Key Feature |
|---|---|
| Deposit Account | 3.50% APY, daily interest, FDIC-insured via Lead Bank |
| Credit Card | 1.5% unlimited cashback, no annual fee |
| Boosted Savings | 4.50% APY up to $10,000 for qualifying users |
| Debit Card | Limited-edition metal card, no annual fee |
Nu Global operates independently of the U.S. Lead Bank products and is not covered by FDIC insurance. Deposits convert automatically into USDC or EURC, both issued by Circle. USDC balances currently earn 3.50 percent APY and EURC balances earn 2.20 percent APY, both paid daily. The company has not disclosed the source of the yields or committed to fixed rates.
Account holders receive a virtual Mastercard for spending abroad with no foreign-exchange markup. Fee-free transfers are available across more than 35 countries at launch, focused on Europe and selected Latin American markets including Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay. Core markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and the United States are scheduled for later integration.
Customers can also hold and trade a limited selection of digital assets, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, inside the same application. Nu Global AG is a member of a Swiss self-regulatory organization recognized by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority. Customer balances carry a Swiss bank default guarantee to the extent required by local law, which differs from U.S. deposit insurance.
Nu applied in September 2025 to form Nubank, National Association. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted conditional approval on January 29, 2026. That approval allows organization work to continue but does not authorize independent banking operations.
Final authorization requires satisfaction of OCC conditions, FDIC deposit insurance and Federal Reserve membership. Company statements indicate capitalization within 12 months of the conditional approval and opening within 18 months, pointing toward possible operations in 2027. Once fully authorized, the bank is expected to offer deposits, credit, lending and digital-asset custody.
Until then, all current U.S. products remain provided by Lead Bank. Nu founder and chief executive David Vélez described the expansion as the beginning of a multi-decade effort outside Latin America.
The launches follow Nu's strongest reported quarter. In the second quarter of 2026 the company recorded net income of 1.06 billion dollars, its first quarter above the 1 billion dollar mark, representing a 49 percent year-over-year increase on a currency-neutral basis. Revenue reached 5.88 billion dollars, up 39 percent. Risk-adjusted net interest margin rose to 12.4 percent.
Nu serves more than 140 million customers across Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. In Brazil it reaches more than 60 percent of the adult population. It describes itself as Mexico's largest digital bank and ranks fourth among Colombian financial institutions by deposits.
Sign-ups for both the U.S. products and Nu Global are available through the company's website. Early participants may receive the limited-edition metal card associated with the U.S. rollout.
