The new non-custodial tool lets users authorize AI agents to buy crypto, swap tokens, bridge assets and complete payments via natural-language prompts while retaining full control of funds
MoonPay has introduced PayBox, a payment vault that connects directly to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. The product allows users to execute cryptocurrency purchases, token swaps, cross-chain transfers, DeFi interactions and everyday payments through conversational commands, with the user approving each action via passkey or predefined spending limits.
Announced on July 29, 2026, PayBox functions as a non-custodial vault that stores both crypto wallets and payment cards. Users install a custom connector inside the AI platforms, create or import a wallet, optionally add payment methods, and register a passkey. Once set up, a user can type a request such as swapping tokens for SOL or booking a flight. The AI prepares the transaction, and the user authorizes it before any funds move.
Wallet keys are protected through multi-party computation and trusted execution environments. The private key is split across isolated hardware enclaves so that neither MoonPay nor the AI agent holds a complete key or can sign a transaction independently. Payment cards are handled via Visa’s agentic commerce protocol, which processes charges without exposing the underlying card number.
Users select one of two permission models. In “Always Ask” mode, every transaction requires a fresh passkey approval. In “Autonomous” mode, the AI can complete actions within user-defined spending and permission limits. Changes to permissions always require a new passkey confirmation, and each authorization is single-use and revocable at any time.
The underlying key-management technology comes from Sodot, the firm MoonPay acquired earlier in 2026. Sodot’s infrastructure already secures more than $50 billion in assets and over 10 million wallets for institutional clients.
At launch, PayBox operates on Solana and several Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible networks, including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo and Robinhood Chain. Additional chains are planned. The vault also supports the x402 open payments protocol, originally developed by Coinbase and now governed by the Linux Foundation. x402 enables AI agents to pay any service built to accept agent-initiated transactions.
Current real-world integrations include restaurant reservations, flight bookings and shopping with major online retailers. Traditional payment methods such as debit cards, bank accounts, Apple Pay and PayPal are also supported alongside crypto rails.
MoonPay plans to extend support to additional AI platforms within the coming weeks. The company also intends to deepen DeFi functionality, allowing agents to route token swaps, trade perpetual futures and manage liquidity positions under the same user-controlled approval rules.
Developers can integrate PayBox into their own AI applications through a software development kit. The product builds on earlier MoonPay initiatives, including an open wallet standard for AI agents, tools that let users buy crypto inside ChatGPT, and prior connections between Claude and crypto wallets.
By combining non-custodial security with natural-language interfaces, PayBox aims to remove the need for users to leave the chat environment or hand custody of funds to a third party when executing on-chain or payment actions.
