Mastercard unveiled Stablecoin Security on October 19 to help financial institutions assess fraud, scams, and sanctions exposure in stablecoin payments before funds reach blockchain networks
Mastercard introduced Stablecoin Security at Money20/20 USA in Las Vegas. The new service combines traditional payment intelligence with blockchain analytics to identify risks across the full transaction lifecycle. It generates a risk score before any funds move on-chain, allowing banks and payment providers to investigate suspicious activity without waiting for settlement.
The tool examines transaction context, the origin of funds, exposure to restricted parties, and scam indicators. Delivered through a platform-agnostic API, it connects directly to existing fraud, compliance, and case-management systems. This integration lets institutions maintain their current workflows while gaining visibility into stablecoin activity.
Ann Johnson, Mastercard’s executive vice president of Security Solutions, described the offering as essential for confident participation in expanding digital asset payments. The announcement came just days after the launch of the company’s Global Money Platform, which unifies fiat and stablecoin operations through a single interface.
Borderless.xyz and Keyrails serve as the first partners for Stablecoin Security. Borderless.xyz links financial institutions with licensed stablecoin providers operating in more than 113 countries and 72 currencies. Keyrails specializes in high-value international trade payments, particularly in emerging markets.
Both companies are alumni of Mastercard’s Start Path Blockchain and Digital Assets program. The collaboration allows institutions using these networks to assess risks across providers, jurisdictions, and traditional payment rails. Rajpal Khangura, co-founder and chief compliance officer of Keyrails, noted that the partnership strengthens trusted infrastructure for stablecoin settlement.
Stablecoin activity has grown rapidly, with total payments reaching $482 billion through September. Analysis of more than 593 million transfer events on Ethereum in 2025 revealed that nearly 60 percent involved multistep chains rather than simple two-party transfers. Such complexity makes it difficult for institutions to track fund origins and intermediate activity.
The new service addresses this gap by evaluating signals throughout the payment journey, from initiation through blockchain movements. It covers arrangements involving multiple financial institutions, currency conversions, and on-chain transfers. For example, a bank facilitating an international supplier payment can now determine whether additional scrutiny is warranted before completing the transaction.
Stablecoin Security begins operations in North America before expanding worldwide. Mastercard plans full commercial availability in 2027, with integration through its recently acquired stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK. The acquisition, completed in August for up to $1.8 billion, provides additional capabilities for handling stablecoin transfers and conversions.
BVNK’s Global Money Platform, launched in mid-October, already connects banks, fintech firms, and businesses for managing fiat accounts, stablecoin payments, and local bank payouts. The company’s support will extend the security tool’s reach in 2027, enabling smoother adoption across more markets and transaction types.
This development builds on Mastercard’s decade-long focus on blockchain technologies. The company launched a permissioned blockchain network in 2017, expanded cryptocurrency card partnerships in 2020, and announced digital currency support in 2021. It later introduced Crypto Source in 2022, Mastercard Crypto Credential in 2023, and expanded stablecoin settlement capabilities in 2025 and 2026.
Recent steps include acquiring BVNK, rolling out the Global Money Platform, securing a New York BitLicense, enabling AI-agent payments, and supporting USDC and RLUSD settlement. Stablecoin Security now adds proactive risk screening to these efforts, ensuring financial institutions can confidently integrate digital assets into core payment operations.
