Payments giant finalizes deal for Ripple-linked fintech BVNK, aiming to connect stablecoins, fiat and blockchain systems amid a $309 billion stablecoin market
Mastercard has completed its $1.8 billion acquisition of BVNK, a global fintech platform specializing in payment infrastructure that supports both traditional and digital currencies. The move positions the company to expand its role in stablecoin settlements, cross-border transactions and the broader integration of blockchain technology with established financial networks.
BVNK operates across 130 countries and provides tools that allow businesses, banks, fintech firms and other institutions to hold, transfer, convert and manage fiat money alongside digital assets through a single compliant system. Mastercard intends to use this infrastructure to reduce friction between banking rails and blockchain networks while maintaining the security and regulatory standards required by institutional clients.
In announcing the completion of the deal, Mastercard stated that the industry’s challenge has shifted from building new payment rails to linking those already in place. The company said the acquisition will help customers move value between digital and traditional forms of money on infrastructure designed for global scale.
Chief Product Officer Jorn Lambert noted that stablecoins are already changing cross-border business-to-business payments, remittances, treasury operations, payouts and settlement processes. He described interoperability as the next critical phase, in which fiat currencies, stablecoins and tokenized deposits function together rather than operating on isolated networks. Success, he indicated, will belong to the organization best able to join these different systems into a seamless experience.
The stablecoin sector has grown beyond $309 billion in total value, according to market data. Mastercard’s strategy centers on facilitating the use of existing digital assets rather than issuing new ones of its own.
BVNK has long worked with Ripple as a key infrastructure partner. The platform natively supports XRP for deposits and payments within its multichain systems. The relationship dates to at least 2024, when BVNK assisted with liquidity channels around Ripple’s institutional stablecoin RLUSD and related B2B services.
Both firms participate in Mastercard’s Crypto Partner Program and have contributed to the development of the Multi-Token Network, which supports the movement of various digital tokens. Ripple is also involved in Mastercard’s central bank digital currency initiatives. Separately, the XRP Ledger has integrated Mastercard’s Verifiable Intent standard, a framework that allows artificial-intelligence agents to verify payment authorizations and conduct pre-settlement risk checks.
These connections expand Mastercard’s capacity to serve banks, payment providers and enterprises seeking faster, lower-cost cross-border settlements, merchant acceptance, treasury management and continuous global transactions.
By combining its worldwide acceptance network with BVNK’s blockchain-native capabilities, Mastercard aims to accelerate institutional use of stablecoins and other digital forms of value. The acquisition equips the payments company with technology already operating at scale across multiple jurisdictions, reducing the complexity that has previously slowed enterprise adoption of on-chain tools.
BVNK’s platform is designed to simplify the process of moving funds between conventional banking channels and distributed ledgers. Mastercard expects this to support a range of use cases, from corporate treasury flows to merchant payouts and always-available settlement services.
Ripple executives have described the expansion of the stablecoin market as a development that benefits the wider payments sector. Mastercard’s purchase of BVNK places the card network in a central position as a connector between traditional finance and the growing array of digital asset networks.
