Chun Wang, the co-founder of one of the world's largest Bitcoin mining pools, has purchased a seat on SpaceX's planned two-year Mars flyby mission, becoming one of the first private citizens to commit to deep space exploration
Chun Wang, a Chinese-born entrepreneur based in Malta, has made headlines by joining SpaceX's ambitious first crewed mission to Mars. As the co-founder of F2Pool, established in 2013, Wang has built significant influence in the cryptocurrency sector. F2Pool currently commands around 10-11% of Bitcoin's global hashrate, making it one of the top three mining pools worldwide.
Wang's involvement in space exploration is not new. In 2025, he funded and commanded the Fram2 mission, SpaceX's first crewed flight over Earth's polar regions. That mission included scientific experiments such as X-ray imaging in microgravity and biological studies, demonstrating his commitment to both technology and discovery.
Wang has been open about his reasons for investing in the Mars flyby. He expressed concern that without private sector involvement, human exploration of Mars could be delayed for generations. In statements shared on social media, he noted the difference between lunar and Martian ambitions.

The Mars mission is expected to launch using SpaceX's advanced Starship vehicle. It will involve a flyby of Mars rather than a landing, with the crew returning to Earth after approximately two years in space. Before that, Wang will participate in a shorter commercial flight around the Moon alongside other private astronauts, including Dennis and Akiko Tito.
This lunar precursor will test new capabilities and provide valuable data for longer-duration missions. SpaceX continues testing Starship iterations, with recent focus on V3 improvements for deep space reliability.
Wang joins a select group of technology leaders using personal resources to accelerate space exploration. This includes figures like Jeff Bezos and Jared Isaacman, who have also funded private missions. His participation underscores how cryptocurrency profits are funding high-risk, high-reward ventures in space.
SpaceX's long-term goal remains establishing a self-sustaining presence on Mars, potentially involving cargo missions starting as early as 2028. Wang's investment adds private pressure to maintain this timeline and keep public attention focused on the red planet.
