CME Group began trading Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap futures on October 19, adding two new regulated contracts to its cryptocurrency derivatives lineup for institutional risk management
CME Group introduced futures contracts on Bitcoin Cash and Uniswap, bringing its total single-asset crypto futures lineup to 11. The exchange first disclosed the plans on September 22, with trading scheduled to commence on October 19 after regulatory clearance. Standard contracts cover 250 Bitcoin Cash and 10,000 Uniswap tokens, while micro contracts cover 25 Bitcoin Cash and 1,000 Uniswap tokens. This expansion gives market participants access to derivatives products tied to two assets outside the major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether.
The listings respond to customer demand for tools to manage price exposure in the crypto sector. Futures contracts allow traders to hedge or speculate on asset movements without needing to custody the underlying tokens. CME already operates a range of crypto-linked futures, and these additions continue that strategy of broadening institutional access.
Bitcoin Cash futures provide exposure to BCH through standardized contracts on a Commodity Futures Trading Commission-regulated platform. The standard version aligns with 250 BCH per contract, and the micro version is one-tenth that size at 25 BCH. These products enable market participants to manage risks associated with Bitcoin Cash price fluctuations in a regulated environment. The contracts were part of an announced expansion and began trading on October 19.
Uniswap futures give traders exposure to UNI, the governance token of the Uniswap Protocol, a decentralized finance platform. Standard contracts cover 10,000 UNI, with micro contracts at 1,000 UNI. Trading operates on a 24/7 schedule, including weekends, which suits global market activity. The contracts are available in two sizes to meet varying participant needs while maintaining the same underlying asset exposure. CME offers similar futures on other crypto assets, placing Uniswap within its established crypto derivatives suite.
These launches occur amid a week of key U.S. economic data releases, including jobless claims on Thursday, flash purchasing managers indexes on Thursday evening and Friday, and the final University of Michigan consumer sentiment index on Friday. Corporate earnings are also in focus, with reports expected from companies including CME Group itself. The timing underscores ongoing institutional interest in crypto derivatives as markets evolve.
Analysts note that a six-month history of trading for UNI futures would meet Securities and Exchange Commission requirements for a spot Uniswap ETF under generic listing standards. Five other crypto asset futures have already generated more than $1 billion in combined notional volume this year, highlighting growing acceptance of regulated derivatives in the space.
The contracts provide another avenue for price risk management without direct token custody, appealing to trading firms and institutions already involved in broader portfolio strategies. CME emphasized that the additions align with customer requests for risk-management tools in the cryptocurrency market.
