Chainalysis data shows rapid growth in automated on-chain spending by software agents, with U.S. wallets leading purchases of AI model access while most transactions remain fractions of a cent
Autonomous AI agents have processed more than 138 million cryptocurrency payments through Coinbase’s x402 protocol on the Base network, according to a new report from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis. The figure marks a sharp rise from roughly 1,500 cumulative payments in mid-2025 to the latest total recorded by the third quarter of 2026.
The activity forms part of what Chainalysis describes as agentic commerce, an emerging category in which software agents independently purchase digital services such as computing power, live web data, coding tools, and AI model inference. Developers increasingly allocate budgets to these agents so they can complete tasks without constant human approval for each transaction.
The overwhelming majority of these payments are extremely small. More than 87 percent fell between one-hundredth of a cent and 10 cents during the period examined, a size range that traditional card networks struggle to process economically. Stablecoins, particularly USD Coin, have become the primary settlement medium because they support frequent, low-value transfers at low cost.
Chainalysis did not disclose the aggregate dollar value of the payments. Separate industry estimates of related activity on Base and other networks place overall x402 settlement volume in the tens of millions of dollars, consistent with the predominance of micro-transactions.
Geographic patterns show clear specialization. U.S.-linked wallets accounted for 88.1 percent of geographically identifiable payments for AI model inference. Chinese-linked wallets represented just 0.1 percent of that category yet generated approximately 90 percent of payments for security and code-analysis services. Nearly all of the Chinese-linked volume went to a single smart-contract auditing tool that uses language models to review Solidity code.
Overall, U.S.-funded agents made about 30 percent of geolocated agent-to-service transactions that Chainalysis could attribute. The firm cautioned that the data capture only identifiable x402 activity and do not represent the full global market.

Behavioral metrics indicate increasing automation. The median time between a wallet receiving funds and making its first x402 payment dropped from 73 days in late 2025 to 18 minutes by the third quarter of 2026. The share of wallets that spent within an hour of funding rose from 4 percent to 67 percent over the same interval. The proportion of agent wallets that received a second funding within 30 days of the first also climbed, reaching 89.3 percent.
Payment networks and technology companies have moved to support the emerging use case. Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe have introduced capabilities for AI-agent transactions. Coinbase has released tools that allow agents to trade and transact and has begun enabling business customers to accept agent payments. Google has launched a dedicated agent-payments protocol. The x402 protocol itself operates under the Linux Foundation with participation from major payment and technology firms.
BlackRock has identified autonomous agents as a potential source of future crypto demand. Will Su, the firm’s head of digital assets research, stated that the company is monitoring the space closely because AI agents could generate meaningful demand for frequent, low-value payments around the clock.
Not all of the recorded volume necessarily stems from fully autonomous agents. Earlier analysis by rival firm TRM Labs suggested that a substantial portion of apparent agent activity on these rails may consist of scripts or self-dealing transactions rather than independent software agents. One TRM assessment of broader x402 settlements estimated that only a single-digit percentage of screened volume met stricter criteria for genuine agent-driven commerce after excluding concentrated or self-initiated flows.
Despite the caveats, the rapid increase in transaction counts and the maturation of supporting infrastructure position agentic commerce as one of the faster-growing applications tracked in Chainalysis’s annual Geography of Crypto series, which this year examined North America’s multi-trillion-dollar crypto economy.
