THORChain launched its ZEC pool on October 2 after a full node churn, with all nodes now monitoring the Zcash chain while native trading remains the next activation step amid shallow liquidity
THORChain has activated a dedicated liquidity pool for Zcash, marking a significant technical milestone in integrating the privacy-focused cryptocurrency into its cross-chain infrastructure. The development, announced on October 2, 2026, follows the completion of a network node rotation, enabling every active node to monitor the Zcash blockchain directly.
With the pool now live, Zcash gains a permissionless venue on the protocol. However, the project made clear that native trading functionality has not yet been switched on and will arrive as the subsequent phase of the rollout.
The pool launch rests on earlier protocol work completed throughout 2026. A March upgrade introduced chain-specific handling for Zcash’s unspent transaction output model, remote procedure call logic, and inclusion of ZEC in the network’s enshrined price oracle. These changes allowed THORChain to interact more directly with the Zcash chain and establish native price tracking.
Subsequent refinements addressed operational details. Developers corrected network-fee reporting and solvency calculations that had previously risked inflated gas tolerance. In September, a targeted fix resolved signing inconsistencies that arose when nodes calculated Zcash transaction expiry from differing local chain tips. The update tied expiry to an agreed height at a fixed THORChain block and ensured consistent handling during retries.
By mid-September the project had identified Zcash as next in line for mainnet integration once network stability priorities were addressed. The October 2 activation of the liquidity pool and full node monitoring completed that preparatory phase.
Although the pool is operational, liquidity remains limited. THORChain explicitly cautioned early users about potential higher slippage until depth improves over time. No specific pool-depth figures or precise trading activation date were provided in the announcement.
THORChain’s design relies on continuous liquidity pools that facilitate native asset swaps without wrapped tokens or traditional bridges. RUNE serves as the settlement and routing asset across supported chains. Zcash support required additional configuration for address validation, gas units, dust thresholds, block timing, and inbound transaction rules consistent with its UTXO structure.
An active-node view on the network explorer currently lists ZEC status as operational alongside other tracked chains including Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Zcash did not register a sharp price move immediately after the announcement. At the time of reporting it traded near $1,386, registering a modest daily gain of 0.38 percent. Over the preceding month the asset had advanced approximately 76 percent while posting a 16 percent decline on a weekly basis.
The integration occurs against a backdrop of ongoing discussion around THORChain’s role in processing large volumes of assets linked to prior exchange incidents. Following the September 2026 Bitget event, which involved roughly $387.5 million across multiple assets including ZEC, wallets associated with unauthorized transfers completed swaps through the protocol converting approximately $6.3 million in ETH into Bitcoin. Bitget requested that specific addresses be restricted; THORChain declined, stating that its emergency mechanisms protect network solvency and operations but do not enable selective freezes of individual addresses or transactions. Similar questions arose earlier in connection with the 2025 Bybit incident.
Protocol operators can pause individual chains or the full network when solvency is threatened, with major changes requiring two-thirds consensus among node operators. The Zcash pool activation itself does not alter those operational parameters.
Market participants will watch for the formal enabling of native ZEC trading and any subsequent growth in pool liquidity. The current phase establishes monitoring and a liquidity venue; the practical ability to execute cross-chain swaps involving Zcash will depend on the forthcoming trading activation and the gradual accumulation of depth.
THORChain continues to expand supported assets through successive technical upgrades and node-level readiness checks. The Zcash pool represents one more native chain connection within that framework, now awaiting the final operational switch for user-facing swaps.
