SpaceX has chosen Qualcomm to supply advanced radio and baseband technology for a nationwide terrestrial 5G rollout under Starlink Mobile, aimed at delivering full voice, video and data coverage that supplements its satellite service
SpaceX and Qualcomm have announced a multiyear collaboration to build the ground-based 5G network for Starlink Mobile. The agreement centers on Qualcomm’s Dragonwing cellular infrastructure, including the QRU100 radio units and QDU100 baseband units from the Dragonwing line, along with Layer 1 technology.
The package is designed to support high-capacity coverage across tens of thousands of cell sites. Deployment is scheduled to begin in 2027. Qualcomm described the partnership as its largest 5G initiative to date, marking a shift from its traditional focus on chipsets and modems into full infrastructure provision for carriers and network operators.
Starlink Mobile already serves millions of subscribers with low-Earth orbit satellite broadband and offers direct-to-device connectivity. However, the satellite-only approach has limitations in delivering seamless voice, video and high-speed data on standard smartphones compared with traditional mobile networks.
The new ground infrastructure is intended to fill those gaps, creating a hybrid service that combines satellite reach with terrestrial speed and reliability. Qualcomm’s technology will enable base stations capable of supporting this integrated model nationwide.
SpaceX continues to secure the necessary resources for its terrestrial ambitions. It has reached an agreement to acquire low-band spectrum licenses in the 800 MHz band from Grain Management, covering up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum. The deal requires Federal Communications Commission approval.
These steps form part of a broader effort to challenge established wireless carriers. SpaceX is also in discussions to acquire EchoStar’s Boost Mobile, which could add an established customer base and infrastructure to its portfolio.
Starlink has become a major contributor to SpaceX’s finances, accounting for 36 percent of revenue and 85 percent of operating profit in the third quarter of 2026. The company’s valuation has reached close to $2 trillion following its record IPO in June 2026.
While the terrestrial network is not yet operational, the Qualcomm partnership and spectrum moves signal SpaceX’s determination to expand beyond satellites into full mobile connectivity. The rollout is expected to create thousands of new cell sites, potentially sharing infrastructure with tower operators such as American Tower and Crown Castle.
