Researchers tracking yellow-bellied marmots in the Colorado Rockies have turned to unconventional online fundraising after a federal grant denial disrupted support for one of the world’s longest continuous wildlife studies. A Solana-based meme coin has now surpassed the project’s OnlyFans earnings, delivering more than $14,000 in donations to the lab.

Decades of Fieldwork Face Funding Pressure

The Marmot Adaptive Dynamics Lab, based at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory near Crested Butte, has monitored yellow-bellied marmots since 1962. The project, co-led by University of California, Los Angeles ecology professor Daniel Blumstein and University of Ottawa professor Julien Martin, collects long-term data on animal behavior, survival, and environmental adaptation.

A National Science Foundation grant denial reduced resources for teaching assistants and fieldwork. Blumstein has stated the study requires between $75,000 and $100,000 annually to sustain graduate students and ongoing research. Traditional university-federal funding pathways that once supported such work have become less reliable, prompting the team to explore alternative channels.

OnlyFans Account Draws Early Support

In response, the researchers launched an OnlyFans page under the name OnlyMarms earlier this year. The account offers photographs and updates focused solely on the marmots, described by the team as uncensored content from the field. Signing up required confirming that a human researcher, not an animal, controlled the profile.

The page generated roughly $4,000 in its initial period. Later updates from the lab’s Instagram indicated donations had exceeded $6,000 after the platform’s standard fee. Blumstein noted the approach reached audiences beyond typical science communication circles.

Additional local efforts include a Crested Butte brewery’s release of a Marmot Tears IPA and plans for a Fat Marmot Week event.

Community Token Outpaces Subscription Revenue

Shortly after the OnlyFans launch, community members created a Solana meme coin called OnlyMarms on the Pump.fun platform. Julien Martin registered on the site to claim creator fees on behalf of the lab. The researchers have directed those proceeds toward the study.

According to the lab’s project page, crypto-related donations have surpassed $14,000, more than double the amount raised through OnlyFans. The token has traded near $0.0005, with a reported rise of more than 70 percent in a 24-hour period and an earlier peak above $0.002.

Blumstein has confirmed that the research team did not originate the tokens. Community participants created them independently and invited the lab to collect transaction fees. Several similar tokens appeared on Solana, though the primary OnlyMarms coin has received the most attention and formal endorsement from the project.

Questions Remain on Sustainability

While the token has delivered faster inflows than the subscription platform, researchers have not determined whether fee income will continue at current levels. Meme coin trading volume often declines after initial attention fades. The lab continues to pursue traditional grant opportunities alongside the newer channels.

Blumstein has described the overall funding environment as a departure from earlier decades of stable university and federal support for long-term ecological research. The combination of an OnlyFans presence and a community meme coin has provided interim resources while broader structural questions about scientific funding persist.

The project remains active in the field, with both online campaigns continuing to accept contributions directed to the Marmot Adaptive Dynamics Lab.
