Japanese securities firm and blockchain specialists advance controlled access to decentralized finance through Uniswap v4 technology
SMBC Nikko Securities Inc. and blockchain firm Nethermind have signed a memorandum of understanding with Uniswap Labs, Base and the Nyx Foundation to develop a Japan-focused DeFi Gateway. The initiative aims to create regulated pathways for Japanese investors into decentralized finance, with completion targeted for mid-2027.
The agreement, announced on October 2, 2026, expands an earlier research collaboration between SMBC Nikko and Nethermind that began in March. That initial work examined secure connections between Japanese investors and automated market makers, incorporating risk controls, user safeguards and artificial intelligence tools. The new five-party structure moves the effort from conceptual research into formal development of a liquidity-provisioning protocol and custom pools.
The partners plan to build an open framework for liquidity pools that leverages Uniswap v4 hooks. These hooks will incorporate mechanisms for anti-money laundering, counter-terrorism financing and investor protection directly into pool operations. The approach builds on Uniswap’s existing permissioned pool capabilities, which allow issuer-managed allowlists to control which wallets can swap or provide liquidity at the pool level.
Development will refine automated market-making strategies and v4 hook designs tailored for the Japanese market. This includes token and protocol due diligence processes. The framework will also address asset-deployment strategies covering digital assets such as stablecoins and real-world assets, though no specific issuers, tokens or securities have been named.
Separately, the group is exploring agentic vaults that use verifiable and reproducible artificial intelligence. These systems are designed to support or execute investment decisions within predefined parameters rather than granting unrestricted control to AI tools.
SMBC Nikko will lead regulatory discussions and contribute expertise in compliance, risk modeling and portfolio management. Nethermind is tasked with technical design and delivery, covering engineering, AI integration and smart-contract security.
Uniswap Labs will supply know-how on protocol integration and liquidity-deployment strategies. The Nyx Foundation will advise on market-making approaches and hook structures. Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network, will support deployment within its ecosystem and provide technical input on x402, an open payment protocol that enables software and AI agents to make stablecoin payments via HTTP requests.
Progress on the DeFi Gateway will be shared with Japanese government and regulatory authorities, including the Financial Services Agency. The project is described as a development initiative and has not received formal approval for public use. No launch date, customer eligibility rules, fee structures or minimum investment thresholds have been disclosed.
Japan’s regulatory environment for digital assets continues to evolve. The Financial Services Agency established a dedicated crypto and stablecoin division in August and has issued materials addressing financial-crime risks associated with decentralized finance, stablecoins and self-hosted wallets. Parallel efforts by major Japanese banks aim to enable stablecoin transactions by March 2027.
Before any customer-facing rollout, the participants must finalize the technical framework, test the proposed pool controls and advance ongoing discussions with authorities. The mid-2027 target marks the expected completion of development rather than a confirmed public release.
