Pudgy Penguins has launched Vibes Series 3 trading cards in Target stores nationwide, marking its largest retail expansion yet and pushing its NFT-based brand further into mainstream consumer markets
Pudgy Penguins is bringing its Vibes Series 3 trading cards to Target stores across the United States. This rollout represents the biggest retail distribution step for the trading card game so far. The release adds to previous series and brings the total number of circulated cards to 15 million.
The new set includes additional gameplay mechanics, original artwork, and appearances from characters in the Moonbirds NFT collection. Developed in partnership with Orange Cap Games, Vibes aims to extend the Pudgy Penguins intellectual property into physical collectibles that appeal to both existing fans and new audiences.
This move continues Pudgy Penguins' strategy of translating its Ethereum-based NFT collection into everyday consumer products. The project has previously placed physical toys in over 2,000 Walmart stores and reported strong sales through other major retailers like Walgreens. CEO Luca Netz has highlighted the success of these efforts, noting more than one million toys sold in a 12-month period.
A unique licensing model allows Pudgy Penguins NFT holders to earn 5% of net revenue from physical products featuring their specific penguins. This structure maintains ties between digital owners and the growing retail side of the brand.
Pudgy Penguins, ranked as the fourth-largest NFT collection by market capitalization, started as a collection of 8,888 cartoon penguins on Ethereum in 2021. The brand has since expanded into multiple areas including toys, licensing, and gaming.
On the gaming front, the project launched Pengu Clash on The Open Network and the mobile game Pudgy Party, which saw over one million downloads. Development efforts have since shifted toward the browser-based Pudgy World to better align resources with audience response.
The trading cards serve as another entry point that does not require crypto knowledge or wallet setup, allowing casual shoppers to engage with the characters through traditional collecting and gameplay.
The Target rollout highlights a shift many NFT projects are exploring: using established intellectual property to create value in physical retail and entertainment spaces. By focusing on shelf presence and broad distribution, Pudgy Penguins aims to attract consumers who may never interact with blockchain directly while still supporting its core community.
Success in this area could depend on sustained consumer interest across multiple series, effective integration of new gameplay elements, and continued coordination between retail products and digital experiences. The addition of Moonbirds elements also shows potential for cross-franchise collaboration in physical formats.
