Japanese firm moves another large Bitcoin batch to institutional custodian days after similar transfer, raising questions over potential sales while total holdings stay unchanged
Metaplanet has transferred 1,350 bitcoin, valued at approximately $108 million, to Coinbase Prime in a series of transactions. The move, completed on August 28 across six separate transfers, marks the second such deposit to the same institutional platform within three days and has prompted renewed discussion about the company's treasury strategy.
On-chain data shows the 1,350 bitcoin moved in six transactions, with the largest single batch amounting to 771 bitcoin worth about $61.6 million. The combined value reached roughly $107.9 million. This followed a 1,000 bitcoin transfer valued near $79.8 million sent to Coinbase Prime on August 25.
Coinbase Prime offers custody, financing and trading services. A deposit to the platform does not automatically signal an impending sale. Metaplanet has issued no public statement explaining either of the recent transfers.
That earlier clarification referred to a larger internal movement of 5,014 bitcoin on August 12, which remained within the company's own custodial wallets rather than an exchange-linked venue.
Metaplanet's reported bitcoin treasury stands at 43,000 coins, a level maintained since early July. At recent prices the position is valued near $3.4 billion. The company sits on an unrealized loss of around 17 percent, improved from deeper losses recorded when bitcoin traded near $64,000 in mid-August.
Year-to-date purchases total 7,898 bitcoin across 54 transactions since April 2024, achieved at an average cost of approximately $97,593. Some of the latest coin movements may relate to a separate agreement announced August 18 under which Metaplanet plans to contribute 2,100 bitcoin to Super League Enterprise. That deal aims to support the launch of a U.S.-based bitcoin treasury vehicle to be rebranded Superplanet and is expected to close in the fourth quarter.
The successive transfers to Coinbase Prime have intensified speculation that Metaplanet could prepare to sell a portion of its holdings. Similar movements earlier in the month also drew attention, though previous large internal transfers did not result in sales.
Bitcoin has recovered toward the $80,000 level after testing lower ranges near $60,000. Treasury-company equities have shown mixed responses. Metaplanet's MTPLF shares closed above $2 and carry a strong buy consensus rating, though the stock remains down roughly 22 percent year-to-date. Short interest has risen, with the short volume ratio climbing to 43 percent of off-market trading in August.
Super League Enterprise shares, which will support the Superplanet vehicle, stabilized near $3.80 after reaching a local peak of $5.50, retaining a 37 percent gain over the past month.
Other major corporate bitcoin holders continue to adjust strategies. Strategy, the largest corporate holder with more than 840,000 bitcoin, has paused further purchases and focused on building cash reserves sufficient to cover its debt obligations. Market reaction to that shift has been constructive, with the firm now controlling roughly one of every 25 bitcoins in circulation.
Metaplanet has not announced fresh acquisition plans. Its position ranks among the largest corporate bitcoin treasuries globally, trailing only Strategy and Twenty One Capital. The absence of official commentary on the Coinbase Prime deposits leaves open the possibility of internal reorganization, diversification of storage, or preparation for other treasury operations linked to the upcoming U.S. vehicle.
