HIVE Digital Technologies announces ambitious pivot from Bitcoin mining to large-scale AI infrastructure with a 320 MW facility set to host over 100,000 GPUs
HIVE Digital Technologies, a company traditionally focused on Bitcoin mining, saw its shares jump more than 35% following the announcement of plans to develop a major AI infrastructure project in the Greater Toronto Area. The proposed 320-megawatt facility, described as one of Canada's largest sovereign AI campuses, represents a significant shift in the company's strategy toward high-performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads.
HIVE has been gradually expanding its presence in AI and high-performance computing through its subsidiary BUZZ High Performance Computing Inc. The Toronto-area project marks the company's most substantial move yet in this direction. By leveraging its existing expertise in managing large-scale power infrastructure — originally developed for Bitcoin mining operations — HIVE aims to position itself as a key player in the rapidly growing demand for AI compute resources.
The company currently operates more than 850 MW of power capacity globally and reported a Bitcoin mining hashrate of 22.2 EH/s as of January 2026. This foundation in energy-intensive operations provides a practical advantage as it transitions into AI data centers, which require similar capabilities in power management, cooling, and dense compute deployment.
HIVE has already secured AI cloud service contracts worth around $30 million, demonstrating early traction in the new business line. The new "super factory" or gigafactory is expected to significantly scale these efforts, targeting enterprise, government, and institutional clients seeking robust AI training and inference capabilities.
The CAD 3.5 billion development will include land acquisition, power infrastructure, cooling systems, data hall construction, and GPU hardware procurement. At full capacity, the facility will feature multiple large-scale data halls optimized for running advanced AI models.
Company representatives have emphasized the project's role in building sovereign AI infrastructure within Canada. This positioning could appeal to domestic entities concerned about reliance on foreign hyperscale providers for critical AI workloads. The development is also projected to generate substantial employment: over 800 jobs during the construction phase and hundreds of permanent high-skilled positions once operational.
The more than 35% increase in HIVE's share price reflects strong investor interest in the AI pivot. With the company's market capitalization around $700 million prior to the announcement, the market appears to be pricing in the potential for substantially higher and more stable revenues from AI infrastructure compared to traditional Bitcoin mining margins, which can fluctuate with cryptocurrency prices and network difficulty.
While the announcement generated immediate enthusiasm, delivering on such an ambitious project comes with notable challenges. The timeline to initial operations in the second half of 2027 is aggressive for a development of this scale. Data center construction often faces delays due to supply chain constraints for specialized equipment, regulatory approvals, and power procurement complexities.
Financing the CAD 3.5 billion project — several times the company's recent market value — will likely require a combination of equity raises, debt, strategic partnerships, and potential anchor tenant commitments. GPU availability remains a tight constraint in the broader industry, and any significant cost overruns or timeline slips could impact investor confidence.
Nevertheless, HIVE's existing power assets provide a competitive edge. Access to reliable, large-scale power represents one of the primary bottlenecks in AI infrastructure expansion today. Companies that control such resources can move more quickly than those starting from scratch.
HIVE's move aligns with a wider trend of Bitcoin mining companies repurposing their power infrastructure and operational expertise for AI workloads. The economics of AI compute often offer more predictable revenue streams through hosting and cloud service agreements, contrasting with the cyclical nature of cryptocurrency mining.
The demand for GPU-dense facilities continues to grow as enterprises and governments invest heavily in artificial intelligence capabilities. Facilities capable of supporting large-scale model training and inference are in short supply, creating opportunities for well-positioned operators.
