The Zcash ETF (ZCSH) begins trading after conversion of Grayscale’s long-running trust, coinciding with a sharp rally in the privacy-focused cryptocurrency driven by institutional access and network upgrades
Grayscale Investments began trading shares of The Zcash ETF on NYSE Arca on August 25 under the ticker ZCSH, marking the first exchange-traded product worldwide to provide direct spot exposure to ZEC, the native token of the Zcash network. The listing converts the firm’s existing Grayscale Zcash Trust, which had traded on the OTCQX marketplace since 2021, into a structure that supports continuous share creation and redemption.
The fund holds approximately 387,000 ZEC with assets under management reported near $313.5 million. Coinbase Custody serves as custodian for the underlying tokens, while Bank of New York Mellon handles administration. Authorized participants include Jane Street Capital and Virtu Americas. The annual sponsor fee is set at 2.5 percent, with a portion of fee revenue designated to support Zcash network development and related ecosystem initiatives.
Previously available primarily to accredited investors through over-the-counter quotes, the product now trades on a national securities exchange. Shares can be created or redeemed in 10,000-unit baskets via in-kind ZEC transfers or cash, a mechanism intended to keep the market price aligned with net asset value. The trust was formally renamed The Zcash ETF effective around the listing date following a certificate of amendment filed in Delaware.
Grayscale Head of Index Steve Vanourny linked the product’s timing to broader trends in financial monitoring.
He added that the firm views Zcash as having a compelling long-term role and is making the token accessible through a familiar exchange-traded structure.
ZEC advanced sharply in the days leading up to the listing, reaching levels last seen in 2018. The token traded as high as approximately $867 to $888 in recent sessions, with weekly gains reported in the range of 45 percent to nearly 70 percent depending on the measurement period. Prices later pulled back toward the $820 to $850 area. Market capitalization stood near $13.8 billion, placing Zcash among the larger cryptocurrencies by value.
Derivatives activity intensified alongside the spot move. Perpetual futures open interest nearly doubled to about $1.8 billion, while 24-hour futures volume reached several billion dollars in peak sessions. Positive funding rates indicated that long positions were paying a premium.
An earlier registration amendment disclosed that a subsidiary of Grayscale parent Digital Currency Group was in non-binding discussions to acquire roughly 200,000 ZEC for contribution to the trust. No commitment to complete the transaction was indicated.
Zcash, launched in 2016, combines a 21 million token supply cap and proof-of-work consensus with optional privacy features. Users can send transparent transactions or use shielded transfers that conceal sender, recipient, and amount details via zero-knowledge proofs, while still allowing selective disclosure through viewing keys.
The network faced a critical vulnerability in the Orchard shielded pool disclosed in June. The issue raised the theoretical possibility of undetectable counterfeiting. An emergency response disabled the affected component, and the Ironwood upgrade (also referred to as NU6.3) activated in late July. The upgrade introduced a new shielded pool, restricted withdrawals from the old pool to verified deposits, and added mechanisms intended to improve resilience against certain future risks.
A separate coinholder vote on the scope of the NU7 network upgrade opened around the ETF listing date. Eligible holders with spendable shielded ZEC in the Ironwood pool at a designated snapshot could participate through supported wallets through mid-September. Topics under consideration include issuance adjustments and other protocol features.
Grayscale has previously converted other trusts into ETFs, including those tracking bitcoin and ether. The Zcash product extends that approach to a privacy-oriented asset at a moment when both institutional access channels and network technical changes are converging.
