Five participating institutions now offer direct trading of Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and Polygon through the existing Sparkassen mobile application as part of a phased nationwide rollout
The German savings-bank network, known as Sparkassen, activated cryptocurrency trading inside its banking app on October 19, 2026, at five member institutions. Customers can buy and sell Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana and Polygon directly through the existing Sparkassen app without opening a separate securities account. Each savings bank decides independently whether to enable the feature, so availability varies by location.
DekaBank, the network’s securities provider, manages trade execution and custody. Assets are held centrally by DekaBank, with cooperation from Börse Stuttgart for trading infrastructure. The service forms part of the broader rollout by the German Savings Banks and Giro Association, which anticipates adding 30 to 40 more banks each month and aims to connect most interested institutions before the first half of 2027.
The first wave of assets excludes stablecoins and meme coins. Participating customers access the “Krypto – powered by Deka” service within the investment section of the Sparkassen app. Orders incur a fixed fee of 0.99 euros plus the bid-ask spread. Withdrawals to personal hardware wallets are not permitted at launch; holdings can only be moved to approved cryptocurrency service provider addresses.
Custody remains with DekaBank, and the product is positioned strictly for self-directed adult customers. Sparkassen has stated that it provides no investment advice and continues to recommend traditional securities and savings plans for long-term wealth building.
Each buy or sell transaction in the app carries the 0.99-euro order fee together with the spread applied by DekaBank. Holdings are not covered by statutory deposit insurance, distinguishing them from standard bank deposits.
Sparkassen has historically viewed cryptocurrencies as highly speculative and has repeatedly cautioned customers about sharp price movements and the risk of losing the entire investment. The new service targets adults who actively make their own decisions and understand those risks.
This development represents a notable shift for Sparkassen, a major German banking group traditionally focused on deposits and household banking relationships. The network previously resisted retail cryptocurrency trading due to volatility concerns but has now introduced the offering in response to customer demand and the European MiCA regulation framework.
DekaBank’s institutional crypto infrastructure, which began in 2024, remains separate from the retail rollout. The phased approach ensures that individual Sparkassen can prepare locally while gradually expanding access across the network.
