Galaxy Digital has launched a multi-faceted initiative to fund development work aimed at protecting Bitcoin’s cryptographic foundations from potential future quantum threats, as timelines for powerful quantum machines continue to shorten
Galaxy Digital, a Nasdaq-listed digital asset firm, announced the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, committing up to $5 million in developer grants along with supporting research and expert advisory input. The program focuses on advancing post-quantum cryptographic solutions for the Bitcoin network, including quantum-resistant signature schemes, tools for wallet and custodian migration, and formal security audits of proposed implementations.
Applications for grants are open immediately, with funding distributed on a milestone basis. The initiative also features expanded analysis from Galaxy Research to inform investors, policymakers, and developers about the evolving threat and potential responses. A newly formed Quantum Advisory Council will guide the effort, with initial members including Barry Sanders of the University of Calgary, Damien Bérubé, an MIT Sea Grant Knauss Fellow, and Eran Tromer of Boston University.
Bitcoin’s security relies on elliptic curve cryptography, which could theoretically be compromised by a sufficiently advanced quantum computer running Shor’s algorithm. Such a machine could derive private keys from exposed public keys, enabling unauthorized transactions without on-chain detection. While no such quantum computer exists today, experts note that development timelines are compressing.
Vulnerable holdings are concentrated in legacy and reused addresses where public keys have been revealed on the blockchain. Estimates suggest approximately 6.9 million BTC — valued at around $461 billion at current prices — could be at risk in a scenario referred to as “Q-Day.” Newly generated addresses that have not yet spent funds face lower immediate exposure.+
The launch aligns with growing preparations across governments and the crypto sector. The U.S. government, under President Trump, has issued executive orders advancing quantum computing capabilities while setting a December 2031 deadline for federal post-quantum cryptography migration. The National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized initial post-quantum standards in 2024.
Similar efforts include Coinbase’s quantum advisory work and protocol-level proposals such as BIP-360, which aims to introduce quantum-resistant transaction methods. Upgrading Bitcoin’s cryptography is expected to require extensive coordination across developers, wallet providers, exchanges, and users — a process more complex than prior upgrades like Taproot due to the decentralized nature of the network.
Galaxy has invited other institutions and stakeholders to co-fund grants or contribute research, positioning the initiative as a collaborative industry response rather than a solo endeavor.
