A long-term holder exits a large ETH position for $13.96 million while a separate transfer moves $87 million in bitcoin from Galaxy Digital
A prominent Ethereum wallet that accumulated its holdings more than three years ago has sold 7,323 ETH, locking in losses exceeding $19 million. The transaction occurred as ether traded near multi-month lows and coincided with a large bitcoin movement involving Galaxy Digital.
Onchain data showed the wallet, identified as 0x7C5a, disposed of 7,323 ETH for approximately $13.96 million. The average acquisition price across the position stood at $2,723 per token. The sale price worked out to roughly $1,906 per ETH, producing a substantial realized loss relative to the original cost basis.
Trackers calculated the wallet’s cumulative realized losses at more than $19 million once earlier partial sales were factored in. Staking rewards earned during the holding period proved insufficient to offset the decline in ether’s market value since the purchases were made.
The wallet began building its position in early 2022 and continued buying into March 2023. After completing the accumulation phase, the holder staked the tokens and maintained the position through subsequent market cycles. Patience ended with the recent liquidation, which onchain monitors described as a clear capitulation event.
At the time of the sale, ether traded in the vicinity of $1,900 to $1,918. The exit price sat close to prevailing spot levels, confirming the transaction occurred near the market’s current range rather than at a premium.
Broader cryptocurrency market sentiment remained in the fear zone when the sale took place. Large disposals by long-term holders often attract attention during periods of subdued confidence, as they can amplify caution among remaining participants. At the same time, such moves sometimes attract interest from buyers looking to accumulate at reduced levels.
Ether’s price action in the days surrounding the transaction stayed range-bound near the $1,900 mark, with no immediate sharp reaction directly attributed to the single wallet’s activity.
On the same day, onchain trackers noted a newly created wallet receiving 1,346 BTC valued at $87.28 million directly from Galaxy Digital. The size of the transfer and the use of a fresh address aligned with patterns often associated with over-the-counter activity or custody arrangements.
Galaxy Digital has appeared frequently in large bitcoin movements throughout the year, both receiving coins from long-dormant addresses and redistributing them to new wallets or exchange-linked destinations. Earlier in the summer the firm handled transfers totaling thousands of bitcoin in similar fashion. The ultimate purpose of the latest 1,346 BTC transfer remained unclear pending further onchain activity from the receiving address.
The combination of a multi-year Ethereum holder exiting at a sizable loss and a sizable institutional-linked bitcoin transfer added to the volume of notable onchain events recorded on August 8.
