A political action committee tied to the cryptocurrency industry spent more than $189,000 on media supporting U.S. Representative Jake Auchincloss in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts’ 4th Congressional District. The incumbent defeated challenger Jason Poulos with 72.3 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results reported after the Sept. 1 contest.

Federal Election Commission filings show Protect Progress PAC, described as a Fairshake affiliate, directed $189,527.60 toward media expenditures backing Auchincloss. The spending took the form of independent expenditures, which by law cannot be coordinated with a candidate’s campaign committee.

Challenger Criticizes Outside Support and Messaging

Poulos publicly challenged the involvement of the outside group. In an Aug. 16 letter later updated, he called on Auchincloss to publicly renounce Protect Progress’ efforts, arguing the activity sought to influence both the primary and the general election. Poulos characterized some of the materials as “AI-generated slop mailers” and said the PAC spent the funds across four mailers.

Poulos further alleged that Auchincloss had received $77,500 from crypto-industry sources since 2020. He linked the support to the representative’s vote in favor of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a market-structure bill that passed the House in July 2025 and remains pending in the Senate.

Fairshake Network’s Broader 2026 Activity

The Massachusetts expenditure forms part of continued engagement by Fairshake and its affiliated committees in the 2026 election cycle. Fairshake and related groups previously spent more than $130 million on ads and media during the 2024 cycle. In August, the network directed roughly $3.6 million toward House and Senate races in Alaska, Florida and Wyoming.

Fairshake reported holding $122 million in cash reserves heading into the fall campaign period. Spokesperson Geoff Vetter stated in August that the organization had secured “dozens of wins” across House and Senate races and was “not slowing down heading into November.”

Protect Progress operates as the Democratic-facing affiliate within the Fairshake network, which also works with groups focused primarily on Republican candidates. The network has directed resources toward multiple congressional primaries earlier in the cycle, including contests in Maryland, New York, Utah, Michigan and Washington.

Primary Outcome and Path Ahead

Unofficial tallies showed Auchincloss receiving 36,367 votes, or 72.3 percent, compared with 13,938 votes, or 27.7 percent, for Poulos. The margin advances the incumbent toward a potential fourth term in the House. Massachusetts was among the later states to hold primaries, with New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Delaware scheduled for September contests and the general election set for November.

Independent expenditure rules separate the PAC’s media activity from direct contributions to candidates. No filings cited in the available records alleged coordination between Protect Progress and the Auchincloss campaign. The representative’s support for the Clarity Act places him among lawmakers whose records have drawn attention from crypto-aligned political organizations tracking market-structure legislation.

Fairshake has indicated it will continue allocating resources across competitive House and Senate races in the remaining months of the cycle. Protect Progress has not publicly detailed further plans specific to the Massachusetts general election contest.
