Blockstream has placed its new Swaps service into beta testing, enabling users to move bitcoin trustlessly between the main chain, the Lightning Network and the Liquid sidechain. The launch follows the abrupt suspension of a widely used competing service and is positioned as an addition that improves redundancy rather than a direct replacement.

Service Details and Technical Design

Blockstream Swaps relies on hashed time-locked contracts to execute atomic swaps. In this structure, a trade either settles completely on both sides or fails entirely, returning funds to their original owners after a timeout. No intermediary holds assets during the process, preserving full user control throughout.

The offering completes a three-way connection among Bitcoin’s layers. Earlier work from December 2025 already supported Lightning-to-Liquid transfers. The current release adds mainchain bitcoin support, allowing conversion between on-chain BTC, Liquid Bitcoin (LBTC) and Lightning balances. Users can hold BTC or LBTC and settle Lightning invoices without running channels or securing inbound liquidity. Submarine swaps and reverse submarine swaps handle the directional movements, while chain swaps enable direct BTC-to-LBTC exchanges.

Access remains limited to invited participants. Interested parties can request entry, though Blockstream has not published a timeline for wider availability.

The company stated that development was already underway before recent events and that the suspension of the prior service accelerated the path to beta.

Boltz Suspension and Immediate Impact

On August 3, Boltz indefinitely disabled its swap service. The provider cited months of automated, AI-assisted probing of its systems along with several contained exploits. Attackers were iterating faster than the small team could identify and patch vulnerabilities.

No customer funds were lost. Boltz operates on a self-custodial model and never held user coins. Prior to the halt, the service had supported a modest total value locked. The outage nevertheless disrupted wallets that depended on it for cross-layer transfers, including Bull Bitcoin and Aqua Wallet.

Broader Lightning Network Context

Boltz was not the only operator affected around the same period. ZEUS took its infrastructure offline after a contained security incident, becoming the third notable Lightning service to pause operations within roughly 72 hours. Despite the cluster of disruptions, public Lightning capacity rose by 28 BTC and the number of public channels increased by 256 during the relevant week, according to network analytics.

The episode forms part of a wider pattern in which AI tools have raised the success rate of automated attacks on known vulnerabilities. More than 40 Bitcoin-related firms have since sought defender-level access to the same advanced models used by attackers.

Role of Liquid and Ecosystem Positioning

Blockstream developed and continues to maintain the Liquid Network, a federated sidechain whose LBTC is pegged one-to-one with bitcoin. The Swaps service therefore sits naturally alongside the company’s existing infrastructure. By adding mainchain connectivity to the earlier Lightning-Liquid capability, the product closes the remaining gap for trustless movement across all three layers.

Blockstream has framed the release as complementary infrastructure intended to reduce single points of failure. Merchants can accept Lightning payments and settle them on the network of their choice, while users retain the ability to reach Lightning from cold storage without surrendering custody.

The beta phase is open for organizational testing. No general release date has been announced.
