Geopolitical breakthrough sparks crypto rally with select altcoins posting massive double-digit gains
Bitcoin has reclaimed the psychologically important $80,000 level after US President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, coupled with a significant prisoner exchange. The development marks a notable de-escalation in the ongoing conflict and has injected fresh optimism into global markets, including cryptocurrencies.
According to Trump's announcement, the ceasefire includes a suspension of kinetic activity and a major prisoner swap involving up to 1,000 prisoners from each side. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed the US-brokered prisoner exchange, which successfully returned 314 captives (157 from each side) — the first such swap since October 2025. The talks were facilitated in Abu Dhabi with US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff playing a key mediating role.
While full peace negotiations remain ongoing, the breakthrough represents tangible progress toward ending what Trump described as one of the largest conflicts since World War II. Crypto markets reacted positively, though more modestly compared to previous geopolitical de-escalations such as the US-Iran ceasefire.
Following a brief dip to $79,100 earlier in the week, Bitcoin swiftly recovered, climbing over $1,000 to trade above $80,000. The asset's market capitalization has returned to approximately $1.6 trillion, with dominance hovering around 58%.
This rebound comes after Bitcoin's impressive late April rally that saw it peak near $83,000. Analysts note that while the ceasefire provided a positive catalyst, broader market drivers including monetary policy expectations and institutional flows continue to play a significant role.
Other notable performers included SOL, FIL, VVV, and ARB, all posting gains between 5% and 16%. Ethereum reclaimed $2,300, while XRP edged higher in its battle with BNB for market cap positioning.
The ceasefire news arrives at a time when crypto markets were already showing resilience. The modest reaction compared to the US-Iran ceasefire earlier highlights Bitcoin's maturing response to geopolitical events. Institutional interest, ETF flows, and on-chain metrics remain primary drivers.
Analysts will be closely watching whether the three-day ceasefire can be extended into more substantive peace talks. Any sustained reduction in global tensions typically supports risk assets, including cryptocurrencies.
