The crypto exchange is developing a potential reorganization plan that could allow phased operations to resume, with a detailed roadmap due by September 9, while original wind-down timelines remain in place
BitMart has shifted its stance from a planned permanent closure toward exploring a restructuring and possible restart of certain operations. The exchange, which serves more than 12 million registered users, issued the update on August 21, roughly four weeks after first declaring an orderly wind-down of its trading platform.
The July 26 notice halted new account registrations, deposits, and fresh orders. Spot and futures trading is still scheduled to cease on August 26, with the full platform set to close on January 31, 2027. Withdrawals were intended to remain available through that final date. The company cited operating conditions, broader market factors, and strategic direction as the reasons for the decision, without referencing any shortage of funds.
In its latest statement, BitMart said it is preparing a potential restructuring and business resumption plan as an alternative to complete liquidation. Any phased restart would occur only after a compliance assessment and would run alongside distributions to creditors. The firm has retained White & Case, a major international law firm, to advise on the process.
A specific roadmap outlining next steps is expected no later than September 9. The exchange has stated that the community will be consulted once any formal resumption framework is launched. The original wind-down schedule has not been cancelled.
Despite the promise that withdrawals would continue, many users have reported delays, additional compliance checks, and in some cases complete inability to move funds. Ethereum outflows from the platform reached elevated levels earlier in the process as account holders sought to exit. The exchange has maintained that withdrawals are still being processed.
Founder Sheldon Xia stated on August 8 that the company “has not run away” and “will not run away.” He urged users to disregard screenshots and claims attributed to current or former staff. Xia provided no reserve figures or specific repayment timeline. The exchange had earlier promised a proof-of-reserves report, first referenced in May, but has not released one.
Public data shows the platform reporting approximately $5.36 million in reserves, a large portion of which is held in its native BMX token, against significantly higher reported daily trading volume. BitMart also carries a history of security incidents, including a December 2021 breach in which hackers removed roughly $150 million to $196 million from hot wallets.
Nenter Chow, appointed global chief executive in April 2025 when Xia moved to a group president role, has said he was dismissed on July 24, two days before the shutdown notice was issued.
Separately, on August 17, individuals claiming to be employees temporarily controlled BitMart’s Chinese-language social media account and issued five demands. These included accounting for user funds, explaining blocked withdrawals, opening related entities to scrutiny, paying outstanding staff wages, and presenting a workable repayment plan. Xia described the posts as fabricated and said the account had been compromised. He indicated he would pursue a police report and legal action.

BitMart has advised users to rely solely on its official website, mobile application, and verified channels for information. It has repeated warnings that staff will never request passwords, verification codes, or recovery phrases, and that no paid priority withdrawal services exist. Users with open positions or pending withdrawals have been directed to follow the procedures set out in the original July notice while the restructuring framework is developed.
The BMX token fell sharply after the initial shutdown announcement, declining by nearly half within a day, and has since traded at lower levels. Market participants continue to await concrete details on reserves, creditor distributions, and any confirmed timeline for operational resumption.
