Gabriel Perez, who has operated President Donald Trump’s teleprompter since 2016, is under CFTC review for allegedly using advance script access to earn substantial profits on prediction market contracts tied to presidential speeches
According to multiple reports, federal regulators are examining trades placed by Gabriel Perez on Kalshi’s “Mentions” markets. These contracts allow participants to wager on whether specific words or topics appear in public addresses.
Perez reportedly bet on more than a dozen Trump speeches over several months. Key events included the State of the Union address, a World Economic Forum speech in Davos, and remarks at a Medal of Honor ceremony.
Kalshi’s internal surveillance systems identified unusual activity linked to the bets. The platform then referred the matter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Perez has cooperated with the inquiry and acknowledged some of the trades.
Federal prosecutors declined to pursue criminal charges. Discussions focus on a potential settlement that could involve Perez returning profits and facing trading restrictions.
The White House placed Perez on administrative leave. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the situation during a briefing.
She stated that President Trump viewed the matter as “deeply unfortunate and, frankly, a disgrace.” Another operator handled duties for subsequent events.
This case adds to ongoing examinations of potential misuse of nonpublic information on event contract platforms. Similar situations have involved other prediction markets and various sources of information.
Platforms have introduced additional compliance steps, such as employer disclosures, to address these issues. Regulators continue to monitor activity as market volumes increase.
