President Donald Trump meets industry executives Wednesday as the SEC advances token rules and broader legislation remains stalled in Congress
President Donald Trump is set to host cryptocurrency executives at the White House on Wednesday, coinciding with steps by U.S. financial regulators to develop a clearer framework for certain digital assets. According to the president’s official schedule, he plans to deliver remarks alongside technology leaders in the afternoon.
Crypto executives and representatives from industry trade groups are expected to attend, based on accounts from people familiar with the plans. Also anticipated are Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Mike Selig, Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Paul Atkins, and crypto advisor Patrick Witt. Reports indicate participation from firms including Coinbase, Ripple, Andreessen Horowitz and Nasdaq. Representatives from prediction markets were initially considered but will not be included.
On Tuesday, the SEC proposed long-awaited rules that would exempt certain token offerings from securities regulations. The measures aim to simplify the process for crypto companies to issue tokens and raise capital. The proposal includes a startup exemption allowing offerings of up to $5 million over a four-year period and a fundraising exemption permitting up to $75 million annually, subject to financial disclosures and reporting requirements. A safe harbor provision would clarify when related investment contracts end.
SEC Chair Paul Atkins stated that the agency seeks to provide entrepreneurs and market participants with clear pathways to raise capital under federal securities laws. The CFTC is scheduled to discuss crypto regulation, among other topics, at an industry gathering on Thursday, including the first public meeting of its Innovation Advisory Committee.
Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has advanced crypto-friendly policies primarily through the SEC and CFTC. The industry’s leading priority—comprehensive market structure legislation known as the CLARITY Act—has stalled in Congress. Lawmakers have limited time remaining to approve the measure before the end of the year. The bill would divide oversight of digital assets between the SEC and CFTC and establish requirements for market participants.
With legislative progress delayed, industry participants have increased reliance on agency-level actions to provide operational clarity. The White House meeting occurs one day before the CFTC committee session, offering a forum for executives to engage directly with regulators and administration officials.
Trump has earned more than $1.4 billion from his family’s crypto ventures, which include World Liberty Financial and the Trump meme coin. A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted this week found that a majority of Americans believe Trump and his family have inappropriately profited from the sector since his return to power and that his policy decisions are influenced by these private business dealings.
White House representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the event details.
The gathering takes place against a backdrop of ongoing efforts to position the United States as a leader in digital asset innovation while balancing investor protections. Agency proposals and the White House discussion mark the latest developments in the administration’s approach to the sector as congressional action remains uncertain.
