Reddit will enter the benchmark index before trading opens August 18, replacing AvalonBay Communities, with index funds expected to purchase 16.7 million shares
Reddit, Inc. shares climbed sharply following confirmation that the social media company will join the S&P 500. The addition takes effect prior to the market open on August 18 as an off-cycle change driven by the pending acquisition of a current index constituent.
Reddit will take the place of AvalonBay Communities in the S&P 500. AvalonBay is departing the index after agreeing in May to an all-stock merger with Equity Residential. That transaction carries an enterprise value of approximately $69 billion and is expected to close in the second half of 2026. Once completed, the combined entity, to be named Vivmark Residential, is set to retain AvalonBay’s position in the index.
The move was confirmed through a company statement describing it as an off-cycle addition prompted by the acquisition of an existing S&P 500 member.
Shares of Reddit rose more than 11 percent after the news, with some reports citing gains of about 12.6 percent in after-hours trading. Intraday trading on the day of the announcement showed the stock advancing as much as 14.55 percent to around $181.12, with early session prices near $175.69 and substantial volume already recorded shortly after the open. One analysis placed the daily close near $176.39.
Average daily trading volume for Reddit has stood at roughly 5.98 million shares since its public debut. The scale of expected passive buying relative to that volume points to elevated activity around the rebalance.
Passive funds and benchmark-aware managers typically adjust holdings ahead of such inclusions, which can concentrate volume and volatility near the effective date, particularly in the closing auctions preceding the change. New S&P 500 additions have historically shown outperformance from announcement through the inclusion date, with the largest moves often occurring the day after the news. Those relative gains have tended to fade afterward, with additions lagging the broader index by about 2 percent over the subsequent three months, according to one market analyst.
Membership is expected to increase visibility among institutional investors and potentially expand research coverage, though the precise size and timing of flows will depend on individual fund methodologies.
The addition arrives after a challenging period for the shares. Reddit stock was down more than 31 percent year-to-date as of the close prior to the announcement and more than 42 percent below its September 2025 peak.
In its most recent quarter, the company reported net income of $253 million on revenue of $805 million, representing a 61 percent year-over-year increase and marking the eighth consecutive quarter of growth exceeding 60 percent. Management raised its revenue outlook. At the same time, the company noted challenges with search-engine referral traffic late in the period that affected U.S. user growth.
Trading activity into the August 18 effective date is expected to draw close attention as funds complete their adjustments. The opening session following inclusion will offer an initial indication of how those flows settle.
