Mirae Asset has acquired a 97.15% stake in South Korea’s oldest crypto exchange Korbit and rebranded it as Digital X, positioning the platform as a hub for real-world asset tokenization, stablecoins, and integrated traditional and digital finance products
Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of the South Korean financial giant, has finalized its takeover of Korbit, bringing its ownership to 97.15%. The deal, approved by the country’s Fair Trade Commission, represents one of the first instances of a traditional financial group’s affiliate securing controlling interest in a domestic cryptocurrency exchange.
Korbit, founded in 2013 as South Korea’s pioneering crypto platform, will continue operations without disruption for users. Trading, deposits, withdrawals, and account access remain unchanged, with customer funds and assets kept segregated under the Virtual Asset User Protection Act.
The rebranding to Digital X signals broader ambitions beyond spot trading. Mirae Asset aims to develop the platform into an intelligent investment ecosystem that connects real-world assets, security tokens, stablecoins, and traditional financial products. The “X” symbolizes the convergence of different value forms and unexplored opportunities in digital finance.
This initiative forms a core part of Mirae Asset’s “3.0” strategy, leveraging the group’s decades of global investment expertise alongside Korbit’s crypto infrastructure. The focus includes investor education, in-depth research, and institutional-grade services rather than direct competition for trading volume with market leaders like Upbit and Bithumb.
Mirae Asset has stressed rigorous adherence to regulatory standards, including anti-money laundering, KYC, information security, and fraud detection protocols. Leadership has directed the platform to serve as a model for compliance as South Korea refines rules around security token offerings and digital assets.
Despite Korbit’s current market share of less than 1%, the strategy prioritizes sustainable industry growth over volume dominance. Mirae Asset, with approximately $1 trillion in assets under management, sees Digital X as infrastructure supporting the next phase of tokenized finance integration.
The move aligns with increasing participation by traditional financial institutions in digital assets. Recent examples include investments and partnerships involving other exchanges and tokenized deposit initiatives by major banks. Digital X builds on Korbit’s prior international collaborations, such as integration with Coinbase’s Base network.
Mirae Asset has indicated no immediate plans to acquire remaining minority stakes, concentrating instead on enhancing Digital X’s competitiveness through innovation and operational strength.
