The LSE plans a separate night trading platform called LSE 24 to offer extended access to exchange-traded products, responding to retail demand and competition from continuous crypto markets
The London Stock Exchange Group will introduce LSE 24, an independent overnight trading venue, in the first half of 2027. The new platform will operate from 5 p.m. to 7:50 a.m. London time on weekdays, featuring a 30-minute break between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. for end-of-day processing. The main LSE market will continue its standard hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
At launch, trading on LSE 24 will focus on exchange-traded products, providing access to more than 2,600 listed instruments. These include funds tracking UK and US equities, bonds, and commodities. Individual company stocks will not be available initially, as extending hours to them involves additional regulatory and operational considerations.
LSE Chief Executive Julia Hoggett highlighted growing retail interest, particularly from international participants, in accessing London-listed products outside regular hours. The venue leverages the city's time zone to facilitate exposure to both UK and global assets for traders in different regions, such as Asia.
Institutions are also showing increased willingness to engage with retail order flow during these extended sessions. The platform is being designed to accommodate agentic and AI-powered trading tools, supporting automated portfolio management, analysis, and execution as technology reshapes market participation.
Traditional exchanges worldwide are extending trading hours amid pressure from crypto platforms that operate around the clock. CME Group shifted crypto futures and options to 24/7 trading earlier this year. In the US, Nasdaq, the New York Stock Exchange, and Cboe Global Markets have advanced or announced plans for significantly longer sessions.
Crypto venues have expanded beyond digital assets into tokenized versions of stocks, ETFs, and other traditional instruments, attracting retail traders who value continuous access and real-time settlement. This shift has prompted conventional markets to adapt to maintain relevance and capture order flow.
The LSE initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernize infrastructure. Analysts at TD Cowen view LSE 24 as signaling a commitment to digital and AI-driven markets, including integration with the group's planned Digital Securities Depository for enhanced issuance, settlement, and servicing across assets.
Client testing for the new venue is expected by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals. The focus on exchange-traded products allows for simpler implementation during overnight sessions, as these instruments can be supported by market makers pricing off underlying assets.
Success in the initial phase could pave the way for broader inclusion of equities and other products. The move positions London as a competitive hub in an evolving global trading environment where investors increasingly demand flexibility across time zones and asset classes.
