The Kenya National Examinations Council has placed national education credentials on the Avalanche blockchain to combat forgery and speed up checks from months to seconds
Kenya has launched a national electronic certification system that anchors academic records on the Avalanche C-Chain. The initiative, led by the Kenya National Examinations Council, converts examination data into tamper-resistant digital credentials that employers, universities and other institutions can verify in seconds.
More than 15 million historical records dating back to 1989 are already on the network. The platform is expected to expand to roughly 35 million verifiable credentials over time. Certificates from the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations, taken by nearly one million candidates, are now issued exclusively through the digital system.
Until recently, confirming a Kenyan academic certificate required formal requests through official channels or the exchange of paper documents. Individual checks could take up to a month. Large-scale verification requests from recruiters sometimes stretched to six months. Earlier modernization efforts, including QR codes on paper certificates, still depended on centralized databases that could be imitated by fraudulent websites.
The new system records each credential as an immutable entry on the Avalanche C-Chain. Authorized users access an official portal to confirm authenticity almost instantly. The project covers primary and secondary milestones, including Grade 8 and Grade 12 examinations, advanced diplomas and government teaching certifications.
Thousands of forged academic certificates are reported in Kenya each year. By moving verification to a blockchain-secured registry, authorities aim to make alteration and counterfeiting significantly more difficult.
The system was developed through a local Kenyan technology provider using the LegitDoc platform. It currently holds more than 15 million records and is designed to process millions of new certificates annually as future examination cohorts are added. Some announcements have described the overall effort as bringing more than 30 million academic credentials on-chain.
Students can download their own certificates online. Employers and educational institutions use the same portal for rapid authentication. The approach shifts reliance away from institutional trust toward cryptographic proof that can be checked independently.
The Kenyan deployment follows other large-scale record projects on the same network. In India’s Dantewada district, more than 700,000 land records were digitized with the same underlying platform, reducing verification times from weeks to under a day. In the United States, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles has digitized 42 million vehicle titles, while Bergen County in New Jersey is working with property deeds representing approximately $240 billion in real estate value.
These examples illustrate growing interest among government bodies in using high-throughput, low-cost blockchain infrastructure for registries that require both speed and resistance to tampering. Kenya’s academic credentials system stands among the largest public-sector applications of this kind to date.
Avalanche’s native token traded near $6.50 at the time of the announcement, remaining substantially lower than levels recorded a year earlier. Official statements did not indicate whether the deployment is expected to create direct demand for the token.
The next phase will test the system’s ability to scale to the projected 35 million records while maintaining data protection, reliable access and resilience against new forms of digital risk.
