Hsin-Ju Chuang, a former partner at crypto venture firm Hack VC and founder of Dystopia Labs, was found dead at age 37 on Aug. 24 near a remote stretch of Interstate 15 in California’s Mojave Desert. California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene south of Field Road, where she was pronounced dead at 9:47 p.m. local time. Authorities have not released a cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Chuang, who lived in North Las Vegas, was found inside a vehicle under extreme weather conditions. The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner confirmed the death but directed further inquiries to the California Highway Patrol. The agency’s Inland Division and Barstow office are handling the case. Officials have not disclosed autopsy results or additional details about the circumstances. Toxicology and tissue testing could take six months to a year to complete.

Background in Cryptocurrency Industry

Chuang built a career as a growth executive and community organizer in the crypto sector. She previously served as head of growth at Stellar and Solana, contributed to the fully homomorphic encryption project Fhenix, and founded Dystopia Labs, an organization focused on events and developer communities. She joined Hack VC as a venture partner in 2021 and later advanced to partner and head of platform. She moved to a full-time role in May 2025. Her compensation increased from $50,000 to $300,000, and she reported receiving a $30,000 bonus along with promises of additional equity-related payments.

Public Dispute with Former Employer

One day before her death, on Aug. 23, Chuang published a lengthy post detailing allegations against Hack VC. She stated she had rejected a settlement offer that required her silence about her experiences at the firm. She said she preferred to take nothing rather than accept terms that would prevent her from speaking out. Chuang indicated she had dismissed her lawyers and planned to release supporting evidence on Aug. 26.

In the post, she accused Hack VC co-founder Alexander Pack and partner Dmitry Bulaevsky of pressuring her to continue working through a serious medical emergency. She further claimed the firm threatened industry blacklisting if she resigned while ill, delayed her COBRA health insurance coverage, and spread rumors about her. These claims have not been independently verified, and no connection has been established between the post and her death.

Firm’s Response

Hack VC stated that its understanding of events differed materially from Chuang’s account. The firm posted a statement to that effect on Aug. 23 but later removed it after responses directed at Chuang grew increasingly hostile. A spokesperson said the removal was intended to avoid contributing further attention or negativity toward her.

On Wednesday, Hack VC co-founder and managing partner Alexander Pack said the firm was shocked and saddened by the news. He noted that the company had not spoken directly with Chuang for more than 10 months and was unaware of the circumstances surrounding her death. Pack asked the public to be respectful of those grieving.
