Ethereum (ETH) continues to face significant headwinds in 2026, trading near $2,300–$2,360 while underperforming Bitcoin by over 35% in the past year
Despite robust institutional interest and record growth in tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) on the network, persistent whale selling, weakening network fundamentals, and technical breakdowns paint a complex picture for the second-largest cryptocurrency.
ETH has fallen more than 35% against Bitcoin over the past year, mirroring bearish patterns from 2024–2025. Analysts warn of a potential additional 40% drop toward 0.0176 BTC if the multi-year descending trendline resistance holds. Ethereum remains capped below key moving averages, with rising reserves on Binance signaling increased sell-side liquidity compared to Bitcoin's tightening supply.
Multiple indicators suggest Ethereum's recent rally attempts have stalled. ETH was rejected at $2,400, retracing over 5% to around $2,275. Key warning signs include:
Mid-sized Ethereum whales (1,000–10,000 ETH) have reversed course after months of accumulation, offloading over 3.4 million ETH — roughly $7.9 billion at current prices — since October 2025, a 21.5% reduction in holdings. Large transfers continue, with wallets linked to Paradigm Capital and prominent individuals depositing hundreds of millions to exchanges, heightening short-term supply pressure.
Amid the selling pressure, positive developments underscore Ethereum's growing utility. Tokenized U.S. Treasuries on Ethereum have reached a record $8 billion market cap, representing a significant portion of the broader $30.5 billion tokenized funds sector. This reflects rising demand for on-chain yield in volatile markets, with funds like BlackRock's BUIDL heavily deployed on the network.
Public companies are also embracing ETH. BitMine, holding over 4.29% of total ETH supply (5.18 million ETH),continues aggressive accumulation toward a 5% target, though it may slow purchases to focus on staking and other initiatives. Its staking operations already generate substantial revenue.
Bitcoin hovers near $81,000–$82,000, maintaining dominance as institutions favor its corporate treasury narrative. Ethereum's challenges stem partly from fading "ultrasound money" momentum, though its role in tokenization and DeFi remains central. Exchange reserves for ETH are rising while network fees and revenues decline, exacerbating downside risks in the near term.
| Metric | Status |
|---|---|
| ETH Price (approx.) | $2,300–$2,360 |
| ETH/BTC Performance (1Y) | -35% |
| Tokenized Treasuries on ETH | $8B (Record High) |
| Whale Selling (since Oct 2025) | ~3.4M ETH (~$7.9B) |
The path forward for Ethereum hinges on whether institutional demand and RWA growth can outweigh near-term selling pressure and technical weakness. While downside risks to $1,800–$2,000 remain evident, long-term fundamentals tied to tokenization could support a rotation if macro conditions stabilize.
