Trader uploads old college files to Anthropic's model. AI locates forgotten backup and fixes recovery tool error after trillions of failed password attempts
A Bitcoin holder has regained access to 5 BTC worth approximately $400,000 after more than 11 years, thanks to assistance from Anthropic's Claude AI. The user, known on X as cprkrn, had changed the wallet password while under the influence and forgotten it completely.
The recovery process did not involve cracking modern encryption. Instead, Claude analyzed a large set of old computer files, located a forgotten wallet backup created before the password change, and identified a critical error in how the recovery tool was processing password candidates.
Like many early Bitcoin users, cprkrn stored funds in a wallet that combined mnemonic seed phrases with a separate encrypted wallet.dat file containing specific private keys. While intoxicated, the user changed the password on this file and later could not remember it.
Standard seed phrase recovery failed to unlock everything because some keys were imported directly into the wallet file. The user spent years attempting recovery with tools like btcrecover, testing billions to trillions of password combinations without success.
Weeks ago, the user found an old mnemonic phrase in a college notebook that matched addresses linked to the locked funds. Still unable to access the encrypted file, frustration led to uploading large portions of old college computer backups into Claude.
The AI model identified an older wallet.dat backup from December 2019, created before the problematic password change. It also spotted that btcrecover was not correctly combining a shared key with password candidates. After correcting this, Claude guided the successful decryption of the private keys.

The story spread rapidly on X and drew mixed reactions. Some praised the practical use of AI as an intelligent assistant for file analysis and troubleshooting. Others noted that Claude did not "crack" Bitcoin's cryptography but performed thorough data analysis and error correction that a human might have overlooked after years of frustration.
This case highlights ongoing challenges with early cryptocurrency wallets. Estimates suggest millions of BTC remain permanently inaccessible due to lost keys or forgotten credentials. Unlike traditional bank accounts, there is no central authority that can reset access.
The successful recovery adds to growing examples of AI tools helping users manage complex technical tasks in cryptocurrency. While not a replacement for proper key management, models like Claude demonstrate value in systematic file searching and diagnostic reasoning.
