Balance Coin (BLC) lost its dollar peg and plunged over 99 percent following a suspected oracle manipulation attack on the associated 42DAO DeFi protocol, resulting in roughly $915,000 drained
Balance Coin, an algorithmic stablecoin designed to maintain a value near $1, suffered a catastrophic collapse on July 22, 2026. The token fell from around its peg to as low as $0.0012, representing a loss exceeding 99 percent within hours.
Security firms PeckShield and SlowMist identified the incident as an exploit on 42DAO, estimating losses between $912,000 and $915,000. The attack exploited weaknesses in the protocol's Median Oracle and related contracts, specifically the Spotter and Dog modules.
Analysts detailed how the attacker fed an abnormally low price for BTCB into the system. The Spotter contract accepted this manipulated data without price deviation checks, maximum drawdown limits, or minimum price floors. This error propagated instantly to the Dog contract, which handled liquidations without any delay or additional validation.
The exploit unfolded in one transaction. The attacker used the Spotter's poke function to inject the false price directly into the VAT contract. This triggered immediate liquidations of multiple BTCB vaults at undervalued prices, allowing the transfer of collateral to the attacker.
Subsequently, millions of BLC tokens were minted from a null address and dumped on PancakeSwap. The first transaction involved approximately 4.5 million BLC, exchanged for BSC-USD and BTCB. A follow-up transaction minted additional tokens, further depleting liquidity pools and driving the price collapse.
Wallet addresses linked to the incident include the attacker's at 0x9d8d…231c and the victim contract at 0x973a…a9c0c. The exploited Spotter and Dog contracts were identified at specific addresses on the BNB Chain.
Following the crash, BLC's market capitalization dropped to approximately $12,000. Trading volume surged to around $95,000 in 24 hours, with over 1,600 transactions recorded, reflecting intense selling pressure and subsequent speculative activity.
On-chain data showed an initial dip in token holders, followed by an increase to over 18,000 wallets. Large holders continued to control about 64 percent of the supply, indicating concentrated ownership. Analysts noted that the activity aligned more with an exploit than a developer-led rug pull, as there were no signs of prior owner changes or suspicious outflows from team wallets.
The 42DAO incident adds to a series of DeFi exploits seen in 2026. Recent cases include attacks on Allbridge, which lost $1.65 million through liquidity pool manipulation, and earlier bridge vulnerabilities on platforms like Syscoin and Echo Protocol.
These events often stem from similar issues: reliance on external price oracles without sufficient protections, flash loan-enabled manipulations, and rapid liquidation mechanisms that amplify small errors into major losses.
As of the latest reports, the 42DAO team has not issued a detailed recovery plan or compensation details. The Balance Coin ecosystem faces ongoing uncertainty regarding liquidity restoration and user confidence.
| Metric | Pre-Exploit | Post-Exploit |
|---|---|---|
| BLC Price | Near $1 | ~$0.002 |
| Market Cap | Stable | ~$12,000 |
| 24h Volume | Normal | ~$95,000 |
The episode underscores persistent risks in decentralized finance, particularly around oracle integrity and liquidation safeguards in algorithmic stablecoin protocols.
