Jesse Pollak steps back from Base app leadership to focus on core infrastructure, naming Cobie as new lead while the network pivots to trading, stablecoins, and AI applications amid competitive pressures
Jesse Pollak, the creator of Coinbase's Base blockchain, has announced he is stepping away from daily leadership of the Base app. He will concentrate on strengthening the underlying blockchain infrastructure. Jordan Fish, known as Cobie, will take over as the new lead for the app team.
This change follows Pollak's public admission that Base's earlier emphasis on social applications did not produce the expected results. Cobie previously founded Echo, a platform acquired by Coinbase for substantial value, bringing his experience in crypto community building to the role.
In a detailed post on X, Pollak described the first quarter of 2026 as difficult. He noted that initiatives centered on Farcaster, Zora, mini apps, and creator coins failed to sustain momentum. Many such projects saw their activity decline sharply, with creator token investors often ending up at a loss.
Pollak explained that while financial applications like stablecoins, prediction markets, and perpetual futures gained traction, the social-focused efforts did not deliver lasting user engagement. This focus caused Base to fall behind competitors in several key operational areas.
The network will now direct resources toward trading infrastructure, stablecoin payments, and AI-powered tools. Trading will cover a wide range of assets, including tokenized stocks, meme tokens, and application-specific coins. Payments efforts aim to expand stablecoin usage for both individuals and businesses.
AI integration targets support for autonomous agents that can interact directly with blockchain protocols. Pollak highlighted Base's recent technical upgrades, such as the B20 token standard for stablecoins and tokenized assets, and the Model Context Protocol for AI interactions.
Base operates in a crowded Ethereum Layer 2 space. Recent developments, including Robinhood's launch of its own Layer 2 network, have increased pressure to deliver reliable performance and practical financial tools. Base also addressed network reliability issues following outages in late June.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has similarly noted challenges with certain social and content-related features. The company continues to back developer initiatives through various ecosystem funds and programs.
Pollak expressed a long-term vision for Base as infrastructure supporting global financial activity. The leadership and strategic adjustments represent an effort to align with areas showing stronger adoption patterns in decentralized finance.
Base has implemented several upgrades in recent months. These include improvements to privacy features, ledger systems, and support for new token standards. The network continues to record growth in decentralized exchange activity and payment volumes in certain categories.
Under the new structure, the Base app will seek to serve as a comprehensive entry point for on-chain activities, potentially extending beyond the Base ecosystem itself. Pollak will oversee chain-level enhancements to improve throughput, security, and developer tooling.
| Aspect | Previous Approach | Current Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Leadership | Pollak on Base App | Cobie on Base App; Pollak on Chain |
| Core Focus | Social and creator tools | Trading, payments, AI infrastructure |
| Key Challenges Addressed | Limited traction in social features | Network reliability and competitive gaps |
